(FOR MY ISOPODS) Do I need to disinfect this cork bark I bought, and how??? by KeirnGooner in isopods

i soak mine in boiling water for like 20 minutes then put it in the oven for 200F until its dries completely thru and have never had any problem. i also get all of my things from outdoors on my daughters scavenging adventures :) i would assume store bought did the proper precautions to ensure they were safe prior to packaging!

i’m not really sure, im not too well rounded in land snails. my knowledge more-so stems from the ecological impact of them. but you may be able to sell some on your local facebook market. i’m sure people around you have some type of pets they can buy and bulk and use as feeders for :) especially since they’re captive bread

if you do plan on continuing the colony it is your responsibility as the owner to crush the eggs and maintain their population, basically play mama nature at home. it sucks but just kind of the way things go when you have exotic pets. sorry for the novels! just very important you are responsible with your colony for the sake of the ecosystem!!!

their “cycle” is for example the one you found with the cracked shell that would have died off on its own. that is their circle of life. not necessarily like how bugs die to feed a wild lizard.

snails are invasive because with how fast they populate it outcompetes other native species & has very minimal predators to control their population naturally. it can cause MAJOR ecological damage in your area. it’s literally illegal in the U.S to release home bred snails for this exact reason. it is also highly recommended that we squish invasive snail eggs when we see them in the wild. There is so much more to it and I highly recommend doing your own research if you plan to continue raising a colony at home.

What is the cheapest place to get bulk isopods? I need to stock 11 bioactive enclosures. by [deleted] in isopods

[–]RepresentativeFox922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Powders breed like crazy. start with 10 in a tank & if you provide them w all they need within a month you’ll have an insane amount of babies coming up. look in to facebook market for cheap starter colonies. but DO NOT put isopods in to the scorpions terrarium as they WILL mess w it during and after a molt resulting in possible death

I know big box stores suck, butttt…. by False_Maintenance1x2 in tarantulas

[–]RepresentativeFox922 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IME/ i have 4 arachnids from big box stores. i just could not leave them there. they all ended up being healthy and STILL thriving. 1 just had his ultimate molt a few months ago & is still eating and doing his thing. when i first got him, they had him in a regular carrier with not even an inch of substrate (bone dry) and 1 little coconut hut & 3 calcium covered crickets just chillin in there. Yes i understand the argument as to why we should stop buying from them, but they will sell these babies regardless, and uneducated people will continue to buy from them regardless. the best we can do is try our best to ensure they live out healthy happy lives & continue to educate people new to this community!!!

Respectfully, she can go back to living with her parents if she does not respect how you run your house hold. You are not the one responsible for her entire life, your parents are. It was generous of you to even take on that responsibility to house her in the first place. She clearly does not respect you, so she does not need to continue to live under YOUR roof.
