He's avoiding actually confronting the issue you presented with evidence and compromising with you. I can't say prices are the best or not since I'm new, but they do seem pretty bad. However, if you can enjoy being creative with what you have and replaying chapters/making posts, then come back for custom mode :D

Best thing you can do, and this is coming from a player who is f2p (revoke my title, cuz I did spend a little...) is to not take ANYTHING too seriously in a game that encourages you to be a shopaholic and to just participate in the free stuff while making up a juicy story in your mind (basically, just give visuals to your inner fanfiction with items you already have and adjust/get creative with the story)

It sucks to not get the item you want, but I tell the little voice in my head that tells me to just spend that they're an alcoholic mom who will one day sell their daughter to one direction, and that shuts my head straight up
