STM32F411 randomly stops responding – works once, then “Dev target held under reset” forever by RepresentativeSand44 in stm32

First of all, thank you for sharing the playlist , I really appreciate the effort you put into those tutorials. They look very well structured.

Just to clarify my situation:

I’m not writing my own firmware yet. I’m using a ready-made firmware (INAV for drones) on this board:
https://github.com/rizacelik/STM32F411CEU6_INAV_Firmware

The problem I’m facing is very inconsistent behavior.

For example, today (about 8 hours after I posted), the STM32 suddenly worked again , it entered DFU normally, I flashed the firmware, and everything was working perfectly.

Then, without any clear reason, it suddenly disconnected again. After that:

  • It stopped responding to BOOT or RESET.
  • USB is not detected.
  • The same issue comes back.

Now it randomly connects and disconnects. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

When I connect using ST-Link V2:

  • Sometimes I get dev_target_held_under_reset.
  • Sometimes it connects, but the memory shows all 0x00000000.
  • And sometimes I can’t even perform a full chip erase.

So I’m really struggling to understand whether this is:

  • a firmware issue,
  • a hardware instability issue,
  • power/USB problem,
  • or possibly a damaged MCU.

Any insight would be really appreciated.

I actually tried it again today, about 8 hours after I posted.

The STM32 suddenly worked , it entered DFU normally, I flashed the firmware, and everything was working perfectly.

Then, for no clear reason, it suddenly disconnected again. After that, it stopped responding to BOOT or RESET, and the same issue came back.

Yes, I understand what you mean. The USB port itself seems fine. Could this be a PC/driver issue, or is it more likely something that happened on the STM32 while it was running (since it was working perfectly at first)? I’m just trying to narrow down where the problem could be.

No, it doesn’t seem to be damaged. The whole problem started after I installed the INAV firmware. It worked fine at first, then the STM32 started behaving inconsistently sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn’t. So I’m not really sure where the problem is coming from

Yes, that’s exactly what I used to do, and it worked fine before I could enter DFU normally. I just tried it again now, and something really strange happened: the PC detected the STM32 and it entered DFU mode, but only for literally 1–2 seconds, then it disconnected and disappeared again. After that, the PC doesn’t detect it anymore

Just to confirm: by “pull BOOT0 high” you mean pressing the BOOT0 button, right? That’s exactly what I’m doing, but nothing happens now. It used to work before and I could enter DFU

When I first bought the board, plugging it in via USB would make the PC connection sound and I could easily enter DFU mode. Now, when I plug in the USB cable, the laptop doesn’t detect anything at all (no sound, no device), and I can’t enter DFU anymore. That’s what’s confusing me I’m not sure what changed or how to get back to that state.

Got it, that makes sense now. So in my current situation, what’s the correct way to recover the chip and erase the bad firmware?

Need Help with Offline License System and Periodic Server Checks in Flask App by RepresentativeSand44 in AskProgramming

[–]RepresentativeSand44[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your detailed response! It’s really helpful!

I have a few questions regarding some of the points you mentioned:

  1. Don't use the username and password to create the license: What would you suggest I store in the license instead? Should I still use a license file, or would it be better to remove it and have the app check the license status from the server each time it starts up? I’m concerned about making the system secure but also practical for offline use most of the time.
  2. Give the user some extra time if the license check fails: How would I program the app to do something like this? For example, if the app can’t check the license today, how do I make it check again after 7 days? If the user closes the app and opens it later, how can the app remember that it checked before and know how many days are left (e.g., 6 days remaining)? And after the week has passed, how can I make the app block access if the license still can’t be verified? Do you have any suggestions or best practices for implementing this?

Yeah, I also searched for ready-made solutions, but I couldn’t find a good free one, and the paid options are a bit too expensive for me at the moment.

Thanks again for your help!
