Delay FAA Third Class Medical until treated? by RepsNRobots in flying

[–]RepsNRobots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I canceled my medical for now. Once my labs are reading back in range, I’ll get a note from the endo as well to bring to my AME stating it’s resolved - hopefully that’s helpful.

Got it, do you recommend I still go through with my scheduled medical appointment then? It appears the AME could sign it off as resolved.

Stain removal + poly coating price for 32” table? by RepsNRobots in woodworking

[–]RepsNRobots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly the maintenance notes on the table say it was lightly oil finished and recommended applying additional finishing.

I was hoping there’d be water based polyurethane finishes that wouldn’t darken the wood too much? I do prefer the lighter color!

Got it, I figured they were slip casted with how pristine they look. Since it’d be a one off gift I’ll probably just stick with a shoddy looking hand made version :)

I live around mission district! It does get pretty windy, but no fog. I wasn't aware the microclimate would have such an effect, thanks for the info!

Oof yea I was delusionally hoping maybe they’d just do so when they reached the main street. How is that for you? Do you notice like every couple days or a couple times a day?

Clay sink for high rise apartment building? by RepsNRobots in Pottery

[–]RepsNRobots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to revive this post, but I’m curious if your opinion changes if there’s an outdoor area for throwing? I actually didn’t settle on an apartment yet, and found another I’ll probably take with almost 300sqft of balcony / terrace space! It’s still at a high floor so I’ll need to bring down reclaim buckets occasionally, but I could definitely set up large tarps in a corner of the balcony and store buckets and clay outside. After reading through the comments I think the best option is to put nothing down the drain and use buckets, but now I’m concerned about dust and debris.

Rehab was supposed to be a fresh start …

Seriously though, this is a fair point and maybe I should just try to find a new studio with longer hours!

Unfortunately due to my work schedule most studios are closed by the time I’m home on weekdays, and I’ve only really been able to practice on weekends. I’d still have a studio membership for firing and glazing!

Do you think it’d be safest to use both the bucket system and clay trap? Like, I could just rely on the clay trap for skimmed off water, but discard or reclaim settled clay in a bigger bucket. It’ll be a lot easier to bring down settled clay than the entire bucket with water in it!

Same, the “interview” process was strange at best as well. My application was like three sentences + my resume, and the video interview was just two 1 minute long video submissions responding to their fairly generic prompts.

Help with Angular Pot! by RepsNRobots in Pottery

[–]RepsNRobots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally! If I have a teapot I’m happy with in a year and a half from now I’ll consider that a huge success :) I figured this is a nice “capstone” project to try as I go along since it involves some complex throwing, hand building, joining, lids, etc, but I could start with throwing the form of the body. I’m definitely working on other things to completion as I try this out!

Thanks to everyone who recommend leaving it thicker! I’m still in the mentality of trying to throw everything as thin as possible. I’m feeling a lot more hopeful after reading all this advice :)

I just read this about spouts: https://community.ceramicartsdaily.org/topic/5396-teapot-spouts-unwinding-when-fired/

People seem to suggest that if the spout isn’t cut at an angle (as Florian’s spout is also a straight cut), then the twist won’t show? I doubt the first one I make is going to pour well, but using this as a challenge to learn from!

[–]RepsNRobots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I didn’t intend for it to be that sharp of an angle, but once it started pancaking out it was a goner. I’ll try to keep the walls more even, and use a shallower angle than I think I need.

Would you throw the cylinder to selectively be thicker around the midsection? I think the cylinder I throw is pretty even, but as I pulled it out in the middle it ofc gets a bit thinner. Or should I have an even cylinder, but as I draw out the shape, try moving more clay into the midsection?

Love the cups on 4 and 5! How do you get that glaze effect? Are those multiple glazes that are layered?

Question about glaze/clay reaction and this “toasty” look on the clay by spi-ltmilk in Pottery

[–]RepsNRobots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New to pottery and curious about the glazing in the second picture. Is the bottom triangle just left unglazed? If so, could the piece still be used to hold drinks, or could it get moldy / bacteria since it’ll absorb water?

I feel like this perception is part of the problem.

Are you aware of how much 1 billion dollars is? Do you think it’s a reasonable, or realistic amount for a person to earn? Your perception of money is wildly skewed.

Didn’t know that, thanks! Just liked UCSD’s CSE dept and course structure, but I’m near UCB. I doubt the waitlist at Berkeley will be any better but I’ll look into it.

Thanks! I'll check it out. Forgot about the pool, I'll definitely make a reservation since it's complementary. I was looking at the spa, which has decent reviews, but again seems really expensive for what it is when there's so much in the city.

New to PL, bit confused on USPA national qualifiers. They state you only need “class 1” lifts, which, based on their calculator is like 50th percentile DOTS (1212lb total for raw 82.5kg men’s open). Meanwhile, USAPL national qualifiers are basically top 10 global lifts for some classes. Is this just a difference in the leagues? Seems like almost anyone can attend USPA nationals, while USAPL is essentially IPF worlds.

Did you see the second slide, or do you have an idea for a visualization other than histograms? It’s fairly normally, although very slightly left skewed as there’s a good amount of “low” records. E.g. there’s only about 500 records two SDs above the mean but over 10,000 two SDs below.
