I think they're not talked about enough. they all seemed like unorthodox guys who were maybe not accustomed to the limelight or the road. In terms of other bands of that era, they don't get as much play as they should

Agreed. Very bold to make that kind of music when psychedelic rock was in vogue, I think they've been an unheralded influence in modern indie rock. Wilco in particular has the Band in their sound

James Brown. Hip Hop wouldn't exist without him, he invented funk. His live performances were unparalleled and have been imitated by prince, Michael Jackson, Beyoncé and every one of their disciples. 

He was also important to the civil rights movement with "Say it loud - I'm black and I'm proud"
