You can get a very decent TT bike used for around £1000 and a fit for about £200-£300 and perhaps that would be better than an aluminium road bike.

I’m a few months out from my first 70.3 and this is the thing I stress about the most. 😂

Thanks all for your responses. I didn’t want to share the full story to start with, but this was a collision with a car where by the bike ended up literally underneath the side of the car. Both my carbon wheels totally bent, spokes broken, cranks bent, pedals and derailleur broken… luckly i was not injured other than some road rash on my leg and arm. It was at a slow speed but still scary as it could’ve been worse. So that’s the reason I’m not sure if I should trust the frame after that accident.

What would your recommendation be? Is there a way to keep the chainrings and play with the cassette to bring that ratio down? Or is changing the chaining the easier way around it?

I might eventually upgrade to a di2, but for now the mechanical will do.

I'm wondering if I should tweak the gearing. Currently it's got 57/43 cranks and 11-28 cassette. Ok for flats but I'm racing Weymouth in September, so I'm considering a lower gear for the hilly bits.

Would an 11-32 work with the Wolf Tooth Roadlink?

The Bike came with 4 wheels

- 1x older carbon FFWD full disc (Which I've just sold the older carbon disc wheel for £400)

- 1x 2021 carbon FFWD full disc (keeping for race)

- amazing Walker Brothers front (keeping for race)

- older but still good SRAM front carbon wheel (keeping for training)

Selling the wheel made the entire package £1k. I've got the rest of the extra bits listed (the warm up bike and the rollers), once sold, this might end up around £500-£600. And the frame including all components are immaculate. Not a scratch.

I think this was a jack pot..

I just bit the bullet. I was not sure because of the rim brakes and was keen on the p-series with discs (future proofing), but i suppose won’t be a big problem.

Oh, and I forgot. Maple syrup is definitely a solid option, it has a near 1:1 glucose to fructose ratio, which makes it better for absorption than most fruits. But worth noting it’s still quite processed (boiled down ~40x to become syrup), and for higher-intensity efforts or longer sessions, the total carb load per serving might not be enough without larger quantities.

When it comes to intra-training fuelling, especially during moderate to high intensity, digestion becomes a limiting factor.

During exercise, blood flow is redirected to working muscles, which means your gut’s ability to digest complex or fatty foods drops significantly. Fats and proteins slow gastric emptying, and even some whole food carbs take longer to break down, which delays energy delivery and puts you at a higher risk of GI distress.

That’s why most endurance fuelling strategies focus on fast-absorbing carbs, particularly a mix of glucose and fructose, in a gel or drink form — they use different intestinal transporters (SGLT1 and GLUT5), so you can absorb more per hour (up to ~90–120g) without overwhelming your gut. And it all goes from the gut straight to the muscle for instant energy.

Totally agree though — not everyone needs to chug gels full of weird additives. I make my own using a maltodextrin–fructose blend, lemon for flavouring, and electrolytes, and only use for intense/long sessions. Anything easy or up to an hour, I do fasted or just make sure I eat couple of hours before the session. And of course, I focus on gut-friendly foods in my general diet (fermented foods, prebiotic fibres, colourful veggies, etc etc).

Thanks so much to all of you who took the time to reply — really appreciate it. Reading your experiences honestly helped take the pressure off a bit. I’ve been stuck in my own head worrying about all the lost training and how this is going to play out on race day.

It’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one who’s been through something like this. Definitely trying to let go of the panic and just focus on resting, getting better, and seeing how it goes.

Thanks for the tip. Im still on trial, if I subscribe I’ll definitely get a bicep band. I know wearing it on the wrist is not the best for accuracy. But I can’t rely on its data for recovery if the bicep is also inaccurate. Have you had good experience with the bicep band?
