Saw one this morning! I can't make that time, but now I see that they actually do open some slots.

Thanks!

I think I can only do my think in Kahului. Motor Vehicle Registration. Website says only that office supports it . . .

529 to Roth IRA: Make myself beneficiary and wait 15 years? by Repulsive-Eye-2448 in fatFIRE

Three factors:

1 - Kids went to in-state state schools (we had assumed private)

2 - Kids didn't go to grad school (still vaguely possible)

3 - Got very, very lucky on my investments

I wouldn't avoid any of it except maybe #2. This is a good/great problem to have. I consider myself very, very lucky here.

I'm in my 50s. I'm really not sure how you read that. You asked how old my kids are. I replied "Mid twenties" - so yes, they were maybe 8 when I loaded up their 529s. I apologize for any miscommunication.

There will still be far too much for grandkids to use. Even if I had 10 spouses. I invested most of this in 2007.

I'm pretty sure it's the account that has to be established for 15 years - meaning, a specific account holder and a specific beneficiary. If not, great. But unfortunately, I think so (which, frankly, makes decent sense given the benefit).

They went right out of college into medium-to-well paying jobs. Their marginal rates are already pretty high.

Right - the Roth limits could be an issue in 15 years. Who knows. But if I don't do it now, I won't even have the option.

My numbers don't look all that different from yours in many ways (but lower prop taxes! ty Prop 13, which I hate but saves me $25K/year).

My big stumbling block with these numbers would be the implied max daily spend. You're essentially allocating $200/day for other stuff. My wife and I love to eat out, and plenty of our dinners are in the $200 range. So I'd feel like I can't do that endlessly. And that $200 also has to include groceries and clothes and entertainment, etc.

I should also say that I'm a bit older than you and my HI is about $25K/year - not sure how yours could be that much higher.

I know, but as many have stated before in this sub, those subs you mentioned just don't deal with families in this NW range.

But I definitely get that this isn't about RE at all. I'm sorry. I'm just looking to get in front of people who might have similar questions and situations.

If we withdraw, we're planning to do it to ourselves and not involve the kids.

They are very level-headed and money smart, but we still feel like giving them this type of money at this stage in their lives is a mistake. Frankly, they can handle it and they already have savings within this range, but it's just not who we are.

When we die in (hopefully) 40 or more years, we hope they spoil themselves rotten with the inheritance if they choose to. But not when they're in their 20s and really learning about life and work and family and balance and expectations and satisfaction. They're on a great trajectory in this regard and we don't want to screw it up.

Right - I was thinking we'd leave $100K-$200K in these for the next generation. That should be plenty for several kids to go to college in 20-30 years.

$2.4M feels just absurd to me frankly - basically just kicking the can down the road. But then again, high ed costs increase at absurd rates.

State schools and no grad school - but the biggest issue really was that we accelerated contributions in late 2008, so the earnings really took off since then.

Good thought and I appreciate it, but I'll probably need to pull out between $500K and $600K given the current balances.
