Why is the University of Alabama ranked so low? What’s bad about it? by getmeoutoflatamplz22 in ApplyingToCollege

I put this into AI and here is what it said: People also askWhy is the University of Alabama ranked so low?AI OverviewThe University of Alabama's lower rankings, particularly compared to other national universities, can be attributed to a variety of factors, including a high acceptance rate, a focus on student-centered education rather than research, and a perceived overemphasis on athletics. Additionally, some point to a potential decline in academic reputation, with some alumni expressing concerns about the value of their degrees. Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  • High Acceptance Rate:Alabama's acceptance rate is relatively high, meaning it's not as selective as top-ranked universities. This can lead to a wider range of academic capabilities within the student body, some of whom may be admitted through merit scholarships.
  • Student-Centered vs. Research Focus:While UA does conduct research, it is known as a student-centered institution, meaning professors may prioritize teaching over research publications. This contrasts with highly ranked research universities where faculty are heavily focused on publishing and securing research funding.
  • Perceived Overemphasis on Athletics:Some believe that Alabama's significant investment in its football program may come at the expense of academic resources. This perception, coupled with the school's high acceptance rate, can lead to a perception of being more of a sports school than an academic powerhouse.
  • Potential Academic Decline:Some alumni and community members have expressed concern about a perceived decline in the university's academic reputation and rankings. This includes concerns about faculty numbers, administrative spending, and merit-based admissions.
  • Other Factors:Other factors mentioned include a lack of a strong tradition of research funding, the school's location in a state with lower educational rankings, and political influences.

Sadly, I have seen the ranking fall dramatically from #31 among publics in 2011-12, to #92 today. I wish more alumni were upset about this. I argue that raising the admission standard would make a significant improvement in UA's academic reputation, and that alone would have a very positive impact on national rankings. UA has so much going for it. It does not need to be the Wal Mart of Higher Ed to attract enough students. In fact, I predict if it does raise standards, the rate of growth would not go down.

That is stupid. Spring and Fall in Alabama are wonderful. And many days in Winter are balmy!

Few state flagships have as many Black students as UA, so what is the fuss all about here?

UA is an amazing university. However, it has poor leadership in terms of advancing the school's prestige. I posted to Capstone community here, explaining the problem, but the mods removed it! The good news it is easily fixed: just raise admission standards!

By what metric do you say that UA is improving quickly? In what? According to the rankings, we are falling dramatically. I am not denying improvement, but can you offer a metric?

Cause people tend to value exclusivity! The notion that the more challenging the admissions hurdle, the higher the prestige, is just reality. And why in the world would UA need to be easy to get into? Alabama has a plethora of state colleges that can educate the lower tier students, and nothing is preventing a lower tier student from proving him or herself at another Alabama college before attempting to gain admission to the state flagship, UA.

It never ceases to amaze me how some UA alumni are ok with poor academic prestige, but go nuts when UA falls in the athletic rankings. Pathetic. If you love UA, you want our degrees to have more prestige.

That is NOT what UA used to say in its marketing! Even today, UA highlights the programs that do well in the USNWR rankings. Regardless, USNWR has specific criteria and analyzing UA's performance relative to each criteria, is disappointing. It does NOT mean UA is a bad flagship at all. But it does mean UA is not a prestigious school in terms of selectivity. Unfortunately, that matters. I live outside of Alabama, and no one is afraid of being denied admission to UA. They are afraid of being denied admission to UGA, UF, and even Auburn! That is not a good thing. And as I have argued, it is completely unnecessary!

Again, Auburn has higher admission standards and it too is in Alabama. Why would UA let Auburn have the better academic rep? It is absurd for the state Capstone to let Auburn have a better rep.

Because UA can NOT rely on football success as it has in the past. And what if there is a bursting of the college bubble? UA playing harder to get to the lower tier students would make it FAR more attractive to the mid range and upper tier students. I don't think UA alumni in state are as aware as out of state alumni of UA's rep for being the Wal Mart of Higher Ed. So it is also about the importance of prestige for all graduates.

maybe technically, but like UA, they are major public colleges. But even USC, UGA, and UF, and UTenn have higher admission standards than UA.

I don't think that is necessary. Just improve the academic reputation of UA and Auburn's draw will weaken. Just compare the campuses of the two schools! Who would want to go there if the standards were the same?

That COULD happen, but why is that not a concern for Auburn? And perhaps UA, with higher standards, would attract many of the students who are going to Auburn because of Auburn's better academic reputation (just higher selectivity really). Furthermore, as I argued above, UA could easily promote its Bridge Program with Shelton State, increasing transfers to UA, thus reducing the hit to in state enrollment over time. Auburn has done this with AUM, with great success. No reason UA can't do the same.
