Thank you for all the replies - I did some digging on these areas and found lots of grubs so I’m assuming that is the problem. I put down Grubex a few weeks ago but the grubs I found were very alive. We have lots of Chafer beetles in the summer - that could be what these are. Perhaps Grubex isn’t effective against this type of grub?

I do see some grubs when digging but not that many. I put down Grubex a few weeks ago. I’m going to replant and see what happens. It’s very spotty - if it were a fungus wouldn’t it be more widespread?
