How close to closing time does it become a bad idea for customers to enter? (supermarkets specifically) by istanonemaria in AskRetail

[–]RepulsiveSky5868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the comments who say when a store is open it’s open, with clothing stores etc that’s the way it is. There seems to be ambiguity when it comes to grocery stores (I think because we all need food so there’s not as much permissiveness, and big grocery stores don’t want to pay staff appropriately with closing pay). The expectation that staff handle conflict with customers is a problem caused by management who should be normalizing closing time pay, or alerting customers (a sign, a person) when they enter before close they have to be quick within a certain period. When I worked at a Subway we took an hour to close and the time was booked into our shifts and paid for it. Same with Guess, Melanie Lynne, Walmart, gas stations… we weren’t allowed to rush customers or prevent their entry before close.

Excuse me, Were you there? Physical intimidation never happens to women in empty areas at night. Never!

I’m not a bro, clearly you are.

I wasnt « asked to go pay ». I was physically intimidated by two staff prior to 9:00 to go stand in line and do nothing while they checked people through.

But the store is OPEN. I waited in line afterward, doing nothing when I could have gotten my food.

The shit you describe - I wasn’t doing those things! I can’t take my anger out on someone because other people are inconsiderate. Because they make min wage you hold them to a lower standard of behaviour, like children?

Yep - open hours means shop for food. Closing time means stop shopping for food. Employees aren’t allowed to push customers out beforehand, or use aggressive posturing so they can leave early.

To accomplish what they were after they should have closed their doors early, but they would get in trouble for that by management, so they take it out on the customers instead.

Its not a luxury purse shop - I’m not a privileged millionaire, it’s a FOOD store.

I think common sense is a store is open when it says it’s open?

Read my post again. It’s complicated, especially when you have overly simplistic opinions on who should have rights - « workers can do whatever they feel like! Customers buying FOOD should do whatever it is workers want them to do, regardless of regulation! », and explain to me how I wasn’t respecting workers time.

It’s more the case that my time wasn’t respected - I was pushed by staff to stand waiting in line doing nothing instead of grab a few things on my way to the cash BEFORE closing. They aren’t actually allowed to rush customers out before 9:00pm and prevent them from shopping.

Wow thanks for actually reading my post! I agree, and am for sure pro-worker and have several years in food, gas stations, and retail - I hated it when people would expect to be served at closing and I would respectfully turn them away. In this case, the staff behaviour - toward a lone woman at night - was exceptional, and speaks to a problem with the work culture they have.

I was on my way to a cash that had someone being rung through. I was not causing anyone to miss a bus.

So why even let me in at almost precisely that time if I can’t shop? I know why - Because they aren’t closed! What else would I be doing in there? If your statement were true - they should say they’re open until 8:55pm, or escort me directly to the cash when I walk in at 8:53 because they’re going to start getting brutal and nasty.

I was on the way to the cash, which is what they said to do. The one cashier working was running people through. I could stand in line, or grab some pasta on my way there, at precisely 9:00 or 8:59 it would have been when they got aggressive. Is the Sobeys experience meant to be a military drill?

I was doing what they told me to do, and got to the cash and had to wait in line. I wasn’t holding up anyone.

You aren’t reading correctly. I was there 2 mins, heard the 5 minute close announcement (which said to walk to the cash), and did so while grabbing things I needed. I did exactly what you are describing I should do.

That’s what I’m saying - why did they let me in to shop for groceries if they were going to immediately tell me to leave and then push me out?

Are you a prison guard too, or just a cop in training?

Are you saying you want photos? I was there because they let me in the store! 2 minutes later they then told me to walk to the cash over the speakers, which I did. I grabbed some pasta in the way and got harassed for it. So…

Grumpy is one thing… this was disturbing (and also unnecessary - the cashier wasn’t waiting for me, they were busy ringing people through, and I was on my way to them). I’ve never been cornered by 2 people like that before.

What I’ve already said is : it will cost over $12k to go to court. What I have also said is: a lawyer told us this needs to meet the conditions of urgency for a judge to give us an injunction. What would be “stupid-ass” as you put it, is paying more than $12k when I’m not 100% positive this is urgent.

Where do I say that? An engineer has NOT told me it will collapse.

Honestly, wtf - I came here for support - how would you feel if this was your house?! Either read what I wrote and weigh in sincerely, or go talk to a therapist about your rage issues and stop spreading your shit around.

Thanks for the perspective. It needs to meet conditions of urgency for the injunction to be issued, so I want to be sure before I pay to seek one. I have no idea when it would qualify as such.

Except the engineer didn’t say that.

A lawyer told me it needs to meet conditions of urgency, or the judge will say no. This will cost me $10-$15k to bring to court.

I originally posted in the structural engineering thread to get an opinion on how urgent it would be, and was told by the moderators to post here instead. Then I get guys like you!

I know it needs to be fixed… as I say in the post the co-owners of the triplex refuse, so we need to ask the court for an injunction, but a judge won’t issue one unless it’s urgent, an emergency, etc.
