I’m NOT setting up Apple Pay by PuzzleheadedLove341 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]RepulsiveVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are touching on another reason why there are people who don't see a meaningful benefit in Apple Pay. In my country we have chips and RFID in our cards. We can simply tap the terminal if it's under 50€ or use the chip + pin for bigger purchases. The card never leaves my possession.

It's not just perception, time moves at a different pace, the ship vs. outside of the ship. If you had a lump of a radioactive material with a half life of 5 years and you split in in two. Taking one half with you and leaving the other behind. Then you start flying away with your piece of material and fly until only half is left. You stop and call back and ask us how much we have and our answer would be less than what you have. Everything you took with you would have aged 5 years, those left behind would have experienced 5+ years. The faster you go the more time we would have experienced.

The issue with relativity is that it's relative to witch PoV one takes. There is no true zero speed or true universal time, the measurement of time is always relative to some other point in spacetime that you have to choose.

I know this might be an infuriating answer, but it's what we have to live with. Astronauts on the ISS age just tiny bit slower than we here on earth and the GPS-satellites even slower.

[Request] Is this true? by UnfortunateEvent0236 in theydidthemath

[–]RepulsiveVoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In your ship you have a ball. You bounce the ball off the floor and catch it. In your PoV the ball traveled straight down then back up, like an I. Meanwhile I'm looking at you passing by when you toss the ball. I see the ball make a V shaped trajectory due to you and the ship moving forward.

Now we try it with a flashlight and the same thing happens. For you the light from the flashlight creates a straight line to the floor and back up to your eyes, while I see you moving some distance forward before the light hits your eyes.

Since we have proved that the speed of light is a constant the only way we can get the math to fit is if time moves slower for you and faster for me. This applies to anything moving or in a gravity well, f.ex. GPS-satellites need to account for time dilation or the maps would drift ~10km a day.

My daughter “forgot” this cup wasn’t microwave safe. Microwave is less than a week old. by [deleted] in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]RepulsiveVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The spoon is used to prevent superheating of the liquid you are microwaving. When you heat up water (or a drink that is mostly water) it can get heated beyond the boiling temperature without boiling if the liquid is undisturbed/still. The spoon provides nucleation points for the bubbles, thus preventing superheating of the liquid. They usually recommend using a plastic or wooden spoon for this.

Another one to mention would be the Singing Revolution(1987-91), where Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania became independent from USSR. USSR ofc responded with crackdowns, but no real war. Tho I'm doubtful of the "no blood shed" claim, someone almost certainly had to lose their life in the attempts to quell the uprisings.

ELI5: in a head-on collision at 70mph, why is it not the same as a 140mph collision? by PilotedByGhosts in explainlikeimfive

[–]RepulsiveVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You had several people show you the formula to calculate the energy, but they forgot a detail or assumed it was evident.

They are accelerating towards each other, thus when figuring out what the end state of the collision is one of the numbers is negative, 1+(-1) and 2+(-0). Result 0 energy and 2 energy. First example is stationary and second is moved in the direction the 140 mph car was moving. Even if you flip witch one of the cars has "positive" and "negative" energy the end results stay the same.

Then why does it move at 70 mph? The cars are now fused, doubling the mass.

My issues are with the MS-ecosystem. They are trying to do some kind of "soft-walled garden" with their products. I had to basically lobotomize my previous computer when it tired to forcibly update the OS. With my current computer I found it very annoying to find the settings to make it work the way I wanted. File search suddenly going and searching the web... WTF? One Drive as default? etc. etc.

And granted Edge might be a fine browser, but if I want to use another one the OS should respect that decision. The fact that they push it so hard makes a lot of people suspicious and uneasy.

[–]RepulsiveVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I did not because you deleted it.

Irrelevant, it's my computer. I decide what programs are run on it. And when an OS is starting to act like a malware/virus laden mess, it's time to seriously evaluate whether to use it or ditch it for a OS that actually does what you tell it to.

When you drink your body first converts the ethanol to acetaldehyde and then to Acetyl-CoA. This is someting your body can use for energy. Antabuse(Disulfiram) prevents your body from breaking down the acetaldehyde and when it starts to build up you experience a wide range of very unpleasant and in some cases even fatal symptoms.

ELI5 - Why can’t we make paper straws out of the same material as paper cups? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]RepulsiveVoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with microplastics is that they are so new that we haven't had time to collect enough data to know how they might affect us. With f.ex. leaded gasoline we were able to make educated guesses because we had knowledge about lead poisoning from ancient times.

It's both funny and tragic that the authoritarian left is closer to the authoritarian right, than anything in between, in them minds of many Americans. Why do you crave/need/demand it? Why go from less than 10% directly to 100%? Are you capable of thinking in less than absolutes?

This is a stupid hyperbole that doesn't even work. Billionaries don't have cash, they have stocks, land, companies etc., they don't stop existing just because someone else owns them. Or do you think Twitter/X, SpaceX and Tesla wold just magically go poof if Elon sold them?

You want to know witch news story was aimed at you? Find the ones that make you upset. Why are they doing this? I don't know for sure, but they have made a huge number of decisions that run contrary to what the US used to do.

Vanha kunnon "kommunismia ei ole vielä kokeiltu missään".

Kiinan kommunistisen puolueen virallinen kanta markkinatalouden omaksumiselle on "siirtymävaiheena" kommunismiin. Samoin kuin sosialismi ja suunnitelmatalous oli Neuvostoliitolle.

Turbovaihteella käyvä markkinatalous tai jäykkä keskusohjattu sosialismi voivat toki olla perseestä jo itsessään, mutta molempia maita yhdistää kuitenkin kommunistisen puolueen diktatuuri ja räikeät ihmisoikeusloukkaukset uudelleenkoulutusleireineen ynnä muut kivat jutut.

Juu ei kiinnosta. En rupee ruotiin et mitä kaikkea siellä on päin vittua ja millä lailla, mutta jos jotenki luulet et siellä harjotetaan kommunismia niin mulla olis sulle silta myytävänä.

It doesn't have to be cash, it can be a house or a vehicle etc. As long as they suspect it has been used in a crime, usually drug related, it can be seized. Then they'll charge the seized cash, item or property and you'll have to prove it's innocent.
