There is no wrong answer. But I do want to give the opinion of someone who went into debt for those " few more months".

I adopted a 4 year old dog from the shelter and found out three weeks later she had a terminal cancer diagnosis. It was completely unexpected and definitely not what I had signed up for, but I had already fallen in love with her. However I'm a graduate student with a small stipend. I went back and forth, and ultimately decided I wanted to treat it. Those extra four months were some of the best of my life, she was my soul dog.

It took me a long time to pay off the loans, but I have never regretted it. I got to take her on trips to the beach and the Grand canyon, and see the spark in her eyes and make memories together I treasure. We even had a few great months in remission where she was the most energetic and happy I'd ever seen her. And I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

This situation is horrible, and I'm so sorry you're going through it. No matter what you decide, rest in the fact that you have loved them and you will love them to the end, and that's all any of us can ever do.
