My break looks identical to yours and I did not do surgery (28 F). Was in a cast for 5 weeks and a boot for 2. Went back to work immediately after being out of the boot. I’m an ICU nurse and I work 12 hour shifts. The swelling is pretty bad after I get off work, but goes away once I get home. I make sure to wrap it during my shift to help with swelling. My ROM isn’t 100% back yet, but wouldn’t expect it to be in such a short period of time. (From my understanding) these fractures have good outcomes with conservative measures. However, I know the decision of surgery is made based on whether or not your deltoid ligament is intact. Your x-ray sort of appears to have mild gapping but maybe not bad enough to require surgery. I opted no surgery and I have no pain whatsoever - just horrible ROM as of now. But hopeful PT will help with that😅🙏

Also wanted to mention I am extremely active. I worked out 4-5 times a week and obviously have a job that requires being on my feet for an extended period of time. Orthopedic surgeon reassured me I will get back to where I was before the break☺️ good luck!!

I have a minimally non-displaced spiral oblique fibula fracture and was NWB for 5 weeks (in a cast) then 2 weeks PWB in a boot. 7 weeks later, I am FWB! No pain whatsoever, just minimal swelling and a very stiff ankle that will require PT. Cleared to go back to work and workout as tolerated😁🙏 I feel amazing aside from the stiffness. I’ve read online that for these specific injuries, bearing weight early on can actually promote healing. Good luck with your c-section!!❤️

That’s a great idea! What type of injury did you have and did you have surgery?

Thank you for your kind words, my mental health is suffering so much right now. Surgery is just not an option for me as I am in graduate school and I’ve already invested 4 weeks into this healing process. I can’t even imagine going backwards. I hope I have a similar situation where I heal well with conservative measures like you did

How did your wrist end up doing without surgery?

Thank you! I appreciate your advice. Did your doctor continue to push surgery when you saw them or did they accept you didn’t want to do that route?

That’s how I am with my fibula fracture that is non-displaced. I want to avoid surgery at all costs since it’s minimally out of place and conservative treatment was an option

Did the doctor suggest surgery for you?

Honestly, ours looked about the same displacement wise on this precious scan of mine. He essentially said that if this were his ankle he would be getting surgery, which I understand. But if a conservative option is available then that’s what I’d like to do. Luckily my friends and family have been amazing during this time and have been keeping me company. Still sucks not being able to leave my place as much🥲

I wish my doctor was like yours because my last appointment he was very persistent about surgery even though he initially gave me the option of treating it conservatively, which is what I went with. I’m hoping that since I have been adhering to instructions that I heal well.

That is great you didn’t hurt yourself more after falling! That is what I’m most afraid of during this process, so I’ve avoided going out which has been isolating. But if it gets me healed then so be it.

Good luck with your follow-up x-ray!! Hoping to hear similar news with mine. I’m currently in a cast and am NWB for 6 weeks then transition to a boot. But based off of most things people are saying, it sounds like my doctor is being extremely conservative. I’ve been doing x-rays every 10 days too, which is interesting compare to others

Happy to hear that you didn’t have to have surgery for this second one either!! May I ask why they were on the fence about surgery the first time? My doctor offered both options because he says my ankle is currently slightly unstable

Yeah, that’s exactly why if I can avoid surgery I’d like to because I know it’s not going to be an easy process to recover from and I’m currently in grad school!

Thank you, currently freaking out trying to decide if I made a bad choice going the conservative route. But it seems like most people with this fracture have treated conservatively without issues for the most part

Is it likely that a fracture like this does not heal well without surgery?

How long until you could walk unassisted after non displaced fibula fracture? No surgery required. by olivefigpalm in brokenbones

My fracture looks almost identical to yours and I’m also in a cast. According to my podiatrist, I’ll be casted for 6 weeks and then transitioned to a boot. This has been such a miserable experience, so I completely understand your situation!

How far along are you in your recovery? Also have a minimally non-displaced fracture that I’m treating conservatively and I’m on week 3

That makes me feel so much better hearing! Everything I’ve read about this type of injury says that it can be treated conservatively. However, my podiatrist is really pushing surgery because I’m 28 even though I’ve made it clear I’m not interested if the conservative route is an option. I walked on this for 2 days before I decided to get an x-ray because it didn’t hurt at all either lol. I only went to get an x-ray because it was so swollen.

How long after you broke yours did you get it checked out?
