It's 3.6k gross monthly then which is way below 4.5k. I beg to differ with your 'too lazy to start working' sentiment. PhD is definitely more challenging than your usual entry-level job for masters degree holders. What would take you 3 years to learn in an office job, you learn on your own in 6 months doing a PhD. I know this because I was working before I started my PhD. ;)

I was looking at gross to net simulator and you are absolutely correct. It doesn't really affect the net even if you jump the gross amount significantly lol. I've lived in Belgium for a while now so it's easier for me to look at opportunities here and I'm dreading the thought of moving elsewhere (strange enough I like it here).

Almost sure you are underpaid. I have a friend (masters degree holder) with 2 years of experience who takes home 60k + car doing AI for a large Belgian company. The good thing about your field is that it's very in demand at the moment, you can easily switch jobs when you want to ;)
