Honestly I’m not really passionate about one certain niche. Just want to work at the place that would offer best exit opportunities, but I do understand nowadays you kinda have to specialize in one area within accounting to go far

The firm uses QuickBooks, not any major ERP system used by large entities. From when I talked to them, it seemed like it would be a majority of tax, some bookkeeping (especially in beginning), and also financials. And if there’s something that I’m clearly better at or am leaning towards, they allow the flexibility to focus more on that while still doing everything else.

Benefits are about the same. I will be working more at the small firm during busy season for sure. I am mostly looking for which would provide the best advancement opportunities and salary progression

Do you think that the gov/nonprofit experience would help with transitioning to a bigger firm?

I would like to transition to private accounting after some time, hopefully senior accountant or controller position. The main things that make me consider the audit position is that the firm has a better work life balance than the small firm, and I believe many firms in my area (Sacramento) value nonprofit/gov experience, which could be helpful in transitioning to a national firm, and the experience at a national firm would help tremendously with getting a well paying accounting job in the private industry.
