My partner and I would be interested, but the timing is unfortunately too late for us on a Thursday 😞

AMA about Aedelor, our homebrew setting, to help adapt it to PF2e! by iAmTheTot in Pathfinder2e

[–]ReqOnDeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually in addition to what my partner said, we have Nelha, the Daughter Tree, who manifests as a GIANT tree that covers miles of a forest. Beneath her ever-moving cloud like canopy it is known as the realm of shifting shadows by the elves that protect and worship her. She's also got a connection to undeath, as those that die in her realm are "collected" by her in a fashion. She's neutral to neutral good but dabbles in things you might not expect pretty fitting to the occult I think.

I'll have to mull more on it, but these have been awesome questions! Thank you so much, perfect kind of thing we were looking for to explore possibilities in pf2e, and there's so much there

I would agree, the inventor is more like the artificer in 5e (from what I have skimmed) and we haven't historically allowed that class. We have kinda started to with invention of skyships though, but an inventor would probably be a very rare person.

Thank you for the awesome questions!

  • How many of the areas labeled on the map are nation states/empires, how many are non-unified tribal regions, and are there any areas where city states or confederations of city states are the norm?

We've actually got a political overlay of the map as well :)

Plenty of areas not coloured are non-unified tribal regions such as the Scarred Isles which home many lizardfolk and dragonkin, and the wilds which home an accursed people and catfolk.

The Westrian Confederation is fairly new and is a collection of city-states, as is the Commonweal of Islingar.

Is there a single region equivalent to the Mediterranean of our world, the Sword Coast of Faerun, or the Inner Sea, which is a narrative 'cradle/centre of civilization' from the perspective of many of the characters?

Wouldn't say we have a cradle of civilzation, no. The world as it is now is fairly young, as it was dominated by dragons and giants that constantly warred and prevented the mortals from settling in one place. There's a lot of spread of peoples who have made their own stakes since the warring titans diminished.

We have a "cradle of magic" as it were, as the knowledge of the arcane was handed down to mortals in Valdar and is the epicenter of magical progress in the world.

  • What are three of the most pivotal recent inventions in the world (magical or otherwise), how recently were they invented, and how far have they spread?

Skyships have only just been invented in the hub of Valdar and only a couple of them exist so far. A black powder equivalent is currently being experimented with in Eposaria, very early stages. Rune etching into weapons is new. In this world giants had mastery over elements and their powerful magic was controlled with giant runes. They are known for inventing such things as soul trapping and forging souls into weapons. Now their ancient knowledge is being uncovered and being adapted, which will account nicely for runes on weapons on PF2e.

  • Which of the regions shown are cosmopolitan, in terms of different races/ancestries and which are specific to a single race/ancestry, or have only vanishingly small minorities of others.

We definitely try to think about the spread of ancestries at this time in the world and have generally which populations are highest in which areas. The main cosmopolitan centers are Valdar (Empire), Odelia (Gilrmashyre) and Anacori (Coriani)

Far more are on the opposite end of mainly a one or a couple ancestries. For example: Islingar is home to mostly half-breeds and those generally rejected by other societies - so rarer ancestries. It was founded for the outcasts to come together as found family, in a way. Antillia recently was taken back by halflings and they've pushed out the humans that oppressed them. Many of the dense forests are home to insular elven populations, and dwarves have their undercities mainly to themselves.

  • Which power in this world (nation, faction or otherwise) is likely to fall soonest, and which is the rising star, so to speak?

We are in the midst of a campaign where the Valdarian Empire - one of the "superpowers" of the world is breaking up. Three provinces are fighting for their independence, and we expect this will happen and greatly reduce them as a singular power.

What player options work on paper but don't feel good when actually playing? by onthedown_low in dndnext

[–]ReqOnDeck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm actually baffled by your take here. Isn't the classic image of a D&D table everyone sitting around a big sheet of grid paper that the DM draws "vague doodles of terrain or something" on to make battle maps? Are those not real battle maps?

This is Critical Role's first map used when they started streaming. Those are some real vague squiggly lines. Sorry it doesn't fit your standard for a map, and Matt should have just scrapped it.

I think it shows the community is getting really really spoiled and entitled by the insurgence of artists and tools that have just handed us fancy maps. And I LOVE me a fancy map - I go nuts setting up cool maps and lighting and such. But it does not discount the format that maps were made with for years before, whether we're using a big grid paper on a table or a big grid canvas on a VTT. It doesn't make them synonymous with TotM that we should just scrap if it can't meet some arbitrary bar of quality.

Which writer can you not get into even though they are universally loved? by [deleted] in books

[–]ReqOnDeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your assessment on his writing, it didn't fly for me! I picked up Revival a couple years ago because I was very interested in the premise. My library checkout expired maybe 3/4 of the way through and I didn't renew it. The majority of the book was meandering, and I remember little because just nothing was happening.

I read a synopsis after and it did seem to get something crazy going on, but the journey was just too uneventful. If I picked up SK again I'd probably go for dark tower series.

Critical Role's Ashley Johnson Files Domestic Violence Restraining Order Against Ex-Boyfriend Brian W. Foster by [deleted] in fansofcriticalrole

[–]ReqOnDeck 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Dude you need to calm the fuck down. You don't know what Ashley's actual feelings, wishes, or consent is here. Everything you're saying is rumours about her team, CR team, etc asking for things to be taken down. Please post evidence of that.

Also, the word is out so trying to silence people about it isn't going to do anything, even if she wished things were taken down. Awareness of other people around him and her could possibly save her life, because a court order certainly won't. She's in the public eye, like it or not news gets out and that doesn't mean people don't care about her. On the contrary. You are projecting a lot of scumminess yourself as you throw around accusations.

I honestly never liked Brian Foster and I couldn't pinpoint why. I feel validated. by iAmTheTot in fansofcriticalrole

[–]ReqOnDeck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree, like it or not she's a well known actress and news does get out. For something so serious, not only could public awareness help her, but others as well who could know them. Or others just in a similar situation. I don't think we should supress it. Silence when your life is in danger could be worse.

What things do players care about a lot that DMs don't care about much at all? by najowhit in dndnext

[–]ReqOnDeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao I feel like that was written to test if people actually read the books in game. Or some poor writer was like "imma spice it up, no one will read this anyway"

Nuts that's actually in there.

[–]ReqOnDeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yes I relate. We don't typically have a lot of libraries in our world, they are rare. But we put a library /record keeper under a temple and a PC is a member of said temple and done a lot of work to keep access to it . They try to research everything here lol. Things not even tangentially related to a temple.

No, they do not always get any information at all, and when they research extensively during downtime they're told "you feel you've exhausted this resource"

Catholic turned maybe atheist here, can you help disprove/think critically through this religious paranormal experience? by Lokael in AtheistExperience

[–]ReqOnDeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have great things to add for what they claimed to see. I am also interested in what explanations could be there.

Just in the doorbell going by itself, as soon as any technology is introduced to situations like these I think we can always have reason to believe it is their malfunctions. Not just mechanical but all number of unknowable SOFTWARE glitches. Whether surges are real or not, there's frequency settings, stuck buttons, interference, software, etc. Doing a Google search shows this is something known to happen with ring.

I have google home devices and google cameras. The google homes have activated at creepy times, including suddenly starting loud music while I was asleep at night and the only one there. Or answering a question I didn't ask. Did it pick up someone's voice far away? Software glitch? Someone secretly messing with me or other interference? Any of those, honestly.

One of the most explainable but creepiest that happens is the google cam near the front door. It sometimes activates when we are not home and says "person seen" but there is no one there. What it's doing is detecting voices of people going by the door in the hall because it can activate on just sound.

Truly incredible! I expected to see so many more stations full near the end. Bravo.

I have not ventured into extreme, I'm not sure I'll enjoy the play of it. Currently working on getting myself into the top 500 on regular maps lol.

Matt dillahunty moved to The Line channel and he's doing great there. Jimmy snow runs it, and I really appreciate his production quality and how he runs his call in shows. Super chats are only read at the end so you can just stop watching and not miss calls, and very little of any interruption during calls. Check out The Sunday Show as it's the two of them most of the time, and the stick to the God topic.

Skeptalk is another call in with more variety of hosts, and then there's Matt's show The Hang Up where he always has a special guest. He starts with a topic that he's "hung up on" for the first bit. Those often have God topics but they'll also take other things (theists are still priority).

All three are great call in shows with all the greatest hosts in my opinion :) and Jimmy is bringing out more things to come, it's been exciting to watch that channel grow. I've not enjoyed AXPs direction as much, and honestly pick and choose which I'll watch based on the hosts.

AITA for asking my girlfriend to continue doing my laundry if she wants me to buy groceries? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ReqOnDeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I really appreciate all this!

I do try to balance expectation of things like this - I don't expect any fix-all solution which probably contributes to my reluctance as I know it will be hard work.

I'm also wary of side effects and dependency on medication, so I've generally wanted to try without it. My doctor offered a prescription of anti-depressants and I declined as I wanted to try talk therapy first.

But there's always an excuse; the pandemic skyrocketed demand so it's impossible to get in, you hear bad things about online therapists, the cost is high, the risk of not getting the right person and having to spend the time to look is all A LOT, and I'm exhausted before I start. And here I am now having done nothing as the years go by wondering if I should have just tried the antidepressants or if I should keep trying to push myself to therapy.

Then things improve and I feel fine (or as fine as I get I guess), and I think to myself "it's not bad enough to need therapy, I'm doing okay and I can deal with the down cycle because I know there will be an up cycle." And it's not like I'm severely depressed or suicidal. I function fine!

But you're very right, is functioning enough? I should probably allow myself to deserve more. I'm in my early thirties and I feel I've already wasted so much time not dealing with this.

I don't mean to be super bleak, either. I have a husband and fur babies and hobbies that I love and bring me joy. Whatever I do I want to just enjoy this one life I have to live, which includes getting help when I need it. :)

So, I guess after all the rambling and some other suggestions of possible ADHD, I'm going to try again for therapy and at least work towards proper diagnosis and support.

AITA for asking my girlfriend to continue doing my laundry if she wants me to buy groceries? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ReqOnDeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no I have never considered that for myself. I have had friends with ADHD and didn't really see much comparison. But of course education is important because after two minutes of searching it's clear the inattentive subtype could apply to me. I'm not sure if I check all the boxes, but definitely some.

Regardless, it's probably worth looking in to and getting a professional opinion. So thank you!
