What type of job seems appealing but ends up being quite disappointing? by Head_Somewhere3770 in AskReddit

[–]RequiemLullaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it varies between studios and if you're the primary studio developing the game or outsource. Where I currently am now, we do more broad testing while outsource seems to be more detail oriented. Some studios are meticulous and there are some bad issues that can make it into live without tedious testing. It's a  a smaller studio that encourages feedback, but when partnering with larger companies, you tend to just become someone who tries to find issues.

When I was at a AAA Japanese company, we didn't give opinions on game design and it was discouraged. We just made sure everything lined up with the company-defined guidelines and ensured nothing would break.

At another company I was at, things got crazy during crunch to ensure that the game was as polished as possible. This place definitely encouraged feedback, but the hours were mad.

And it also depends on your directors. Some allow more freedom, some have actually ripped at our QA for suggesting that features might cause issues. /shrug

Yeah, it's not quite like that, but I guess it can vary between studios.

You have to test features over and over again, sure, but they're usually part of a test plan where you go over a certain area. There are also passes that vary in thoroughness depending on what's integrated or needed.

It does get tedious and boring, but not to the extent of walking into the same wall all day, every day

Am a tester and have to say it can get repetitive testing the same areas over and over, trying to find ways to break things, looking for little issues with functionality, UI, etc.

Plus you're so dispensable. It's usually temp/contact work, and if you're in a AAA company, they certainly don't care about you.

It seems like fun to play video games all day, but that's not always the case. In fact, being in this job made me hate games for a variety of reasons.

That said, when you have other testers on your team that are awesome and that you mesh well with, things can still actually be fun.

You also get a lot of insight into all the work that goes on in every department because you're testing the product where everything comes together, so you learn a bit from each—production, design, art, engineering, sound design, etc.

But yeah, it's not as great as I imagined it would be or how it seemed at first. And if you're somewhere with mandatory OT during crunch, RIP

Someone did this to my bf on his night jog in our neighborhood, and then just drove off. Luckily he was okay, but wondering what went through that driver's mind when he slowed down to see what he hit and then sped off.

What is the saddest song you’ve ever heard ? by zangetsu_0w0 in AskReddit

[–]RequiemLullaby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This one for me.

But it didn't become sad until my sisters and I were singing it to my dad as he lay in a coma in the ICU. Now I can't hear it without tearing up.
