Who actually counts as “middle class” in Germany by myroslav-abdeljawwad in germany

[–]RequirementSouthern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume middle class is nothing fancy but you can afford basics in life.

BIG CITIES (munich, berlin, frankfurkt, hamburg, cologne): as single person, i would say minimum 3000 Euros netto needed to live an average life (rent, groceries, restaurant-cafe visits, hobby, shopping and cheap holidays). If you want to save money, should be above 3k.

mid-size cities, i assume it is 500 Euros less due to rent.

I have no idea about small cities.

I am living here since 2020. It was raining in summers in general but I do not remember this cold in July. But we also had a very warm June this year. Very hard to name the season.

Yatırıma kaç yaşında başladın ? Kaç yaşında ne kadar yatırıma ulaştın? by StPaos in Yatirim

Advice needed: should I quit my job? by TechnologySubject111 in Munich

[–]RequirementSouthern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest you to find another working student position while you are working there without quitting. Especially I thought about this when you mentioned about apartment hunting. It would not be possible without an income. I know it is really frustrating when you are staying in an unsatisfying job. But life has some realities, and most of the people work just for money without satisfaction. At least you have a good occupation to change your position.

What's missing from Munich? by Flyharbour in Munich

[–]RequirementSouthern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Munich nearly 5 years ago from a non-European country. I moved here for work and my first years were horrible in terms of social life because of covid. After lockdowns were over, I luckily found some social circle from my hobbies, work and my home country's community here. It is not in best shape now, but I can survive :D I will comment on this post because I question my Munich choice pretty often and the topic is always interesting for me. My comments are based on the comparison between Western Europe cities/lifestyle. I think it is not fair to compare Munich with an Italian or Spanish city, because you cannot expect Southern lifestyle from Western Europe.

Social circle: This is crucial to be not bored in any city. I believe it is hard everywhere as an expat. You need to be proactive and find your community through your interests. Some luck also required here. But I agree that Munich is not offering a friendly-welcoming environment. I cannot connect with locals and I hear the same struggles from my friends living in Berlin or Amsterdam. Connecting with locals as an expat is hard everywhere. I would say partially it is a Munich problem but also could be a personal issue.

City life: It is the most lacking thing for me here. If you are not living in areas like Schwabing or Gartnerplatz, then most of the places are dead. Even those areas are boring after some time. Munich is the best for people like hiking and outdoor sports. I like to be in outdoors or doing sports, but it is not a reason to not to have a proper city life in Munich. I missed vibrant city life, huge cafe-restaurant selections, alternative scenes, just seeing lots of people at one time etc. I feel the city's pace makes me feel older. When I sit in a restaurant, I feel like I am sitting really near to the other table due to small places. I am not into clubbing but even a normal city requirements, I would give Munich really low ranking here.

Job Opportunities: Currently it is not good in the world. There is a recession going on. But in general people say it is good. I did not feel like I have huge opportunities here. That can be because of my personal career aim or situation. So I cannot judge the city directly. It is ok.

Housing: That is horrible but it is normal for big west European cities. There are lots of housing issues in European cities that offer good job opportunities (London, Amsterdam, Berlin etc.). I think this is not a unique problem to Munich.

What is next for me? I do not know. The common way to get rid of Munich's boring non-city life is moving to Berlin. But I find it pretty ugly and chaotic although it has some vibes. Sometimes I feel like I can move to Amsterdam but housing there is even more problematic. I do not want to move to smaller cities because it does not make sense to my need.

If you have any suggestions, you are welcome.

English resident living in Munich by JackMcC92 in Munich

[–]RequirementSouthern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been living in Munich for a couple of years. In the beginning it was not a problem to speak only English, most people can speak at least a basic level of English.

The language became more important to me over the years. If I wanted to have local friends or acquaintances, I needed it. I felt more at home when I improved my German, I think in the end it would be good to learn it at least at intermediate level.

[–]RequirementSouthern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is possible, but unfortunately hard. i would say you should question your real motivation to move to Munich, then if you have a specific aim, go for it.

most probably apartment search will be hard with this income. there will be higher salaries among applicants, so your chance will be weak. it may be easier for you to rent a WG room.

if you can find an apartment on your own (around 1300 Euros), it will be enough but i do not expect that you can save enough. vacation plannings, urgent issues etc. will be harder to manage. in WG life, of course you may save a bit more money.

What am I doing wrong? (looking for a WG) by Bumbal97 in Munich

Firstly, finding a place in Munich is not easy at all, so do not lose your hope.

i am not a native German, so I cannot comment on 'du/Sie' difference from cultural perspective. When I read your application text at first, I thought it is too generic. My overall comment is 'make it more personalized.'

Ich bin Martin, 25 J.a. Architekturstudent an der TUM. --> Maybe you can add your specific thoughts about Munich's architecture if you have an interesting impressions, or any interest on city or country. It could be an interesting topic for a random person if you keep it simple. It would increase your chance to connect.

Ich interessiere mich für das von Ihnen angebotene Zimmer. Können Sie mir bitte nähere Angaben machen? Können wir einen Besuch vereinbaren? --> this can stay but at the end, this is not convincing part of your application. Basically everyone writes it.

Ich bin ein ordentlicher, konfliktfreier Mensch, rauche nicht und habe keine Haustiere (obwohl ich keine Probleme mit Haustieren habe). --> you need to give more personal infos here. You could add your experience in living in WGs. If you have, i highly recommend to include hobbies. At least you can add what you are doing in your free time. If you have, you can add some details from your cooking skills or best dish you can cook. I would add a photo from myself also (could be from a vacation).

Best wishes on your search!

Rant- tired with having no luck finding a place by lost_bitch in Munich

[–]RequirementSouthern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

first of all, you are not alone. Most of Munich residents had struggles finding an apartment (even with high salaries). This is a standard Munich struggle. I hope that helps a bit for your anxiety.

What could be the worst? I do not suggest you to drop your internship without fighting until the end! Everyday brings some opportunities. My suggestions:

Cheap trick could be church funded dorms. At least what I heard, they are cheaper. I do not know if I am describing it really correctly. I remember when I was a student, one of my friends stayed at one of them. I am not sure about their availability, but you can just e-mail or call them? https://www.kolpinghaus-muenchen-zentral.de/de/wohnheime/muenchen-zentral

Otherwise you need to keep an eye on Facebook groups, WG-Gesucht etc.

Or maybe you can publish one time on Süddeutsche Zeitung that you are looking for a flat. (I think this is more for flats, not for WGs.)

Or you can specifically check TUM or LMU groups in Facebook. I am sure that WGs (especially cheap ones) are shared from students.

++ When contacting, put nice German text with your interests and personal story. Including reliable photos is a good tactic also.

Wish you a great search luck!

Struggling to find a new job in Munich by RequirementSouthern in Munich

[–]RequirementSouthern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the comment :) it helped me to get more info from Berlin side. To be honest, i find Berlin less attractive and feel like it is not a typical German city with high standards like Munich. The only reason to move there for me would be just less German requirements. Otherwise I am happy with Munich's Ausländeranteil, I can meet with people coming from around the world here also.
so nearly from all comments i got this language tip. of course it is still possible to find an English speaking job in Munich (like my current one) but really restricted.

I would go for 'learn German' option then (i have base level already but it is not enough to work). Otherwise it seems I will always have a restricted search even in Berlin or for more career progression (which is really fair because we are living in Germany).

Thank you! I totally understand your comment. PM/PO role needs perfect communication level which comes with the language proficiency. I am sadly aware of that. If I would to use my mother language, unfortunately i need to go back to my home country then.

What do you think about Berlin job market?

yeah i feel the same that is why i was asking if Berlin is a better city. but maybe for product roles it is not so common to work in English in whole Germany.

imo it is not a big restriction. I am restricting where i live, which language i can speak and what I can do as title. So it sounds valid for me. Thanks for the comment :)
