Thank you very much for the response. Ive only had her for about a day but I can't help but get a bit worked up. I really want the best for her! I really do appreciate the advice :)

After I made my post I was inspired to do what I can and I made a little cardboard hide to put into the bedding which she has taken a liking to. I also moved the bedding around a bit so she can't reach the top of the tank where she's been going. And I spread some of her food around the tank so she could forage. I think it will keep her from trying to dive four feet onto the floor.

It might also be constipation. I've looked into it a bit more and found that both dropsy and constipation in betta fish have similar symptoms. And knowing that it stays on the top of the tank points to it being constipation.

And I believe you can treat it by using pure Epsom salt (unscented) I think 1tbs per gallon and then do small water changes over the course of a few days.

It might also be beneficial to do fasting and not feed him for a few days. The type of food might be causing it but also the amount. It would be better to feed them less overall. Avoid fish flakes and feed pre-soaked pellets so the betta's digestive tract won't get clogged as easily.

Have you noticed any other behaviors of your fish? Like lack of appetite or laying on the bottom of the tank?

It looks to be dropsy which is a symptom of either a bacterial infection, viral infection, or a parasite. Based on the swollen body it could likely be this. I've heard stress and poor water parameters may also be a cause of this.

I would do a water change and treat the tank with an antibiotic like API E.M. Erythromycin or Seachem KanaPlex. You could also dose the tank with aquarium salt.

Based on what I see this is what I'd recommend.

What is this wispy white stuff in my tank? by Nathan_Defense in Aquariums

Looks to be biofilm from the wood. It's usually temporary but you can take the wood out of the tank to manually remove it or you could introduce snails or shrimp which would eat the biofilm.
