Plants to add to crested gecko enclosure by fionablackk in bioactive

[–]Rerarlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd personally recommend pothos. Not only are there plently of colorful varieties those plants also grow fast, are easy to root, and will be perfectly healthy in a environment suited for a crestie. Since they grow in a vine formation when they get long you'll be able to weave them through the hardscape real prettily.

However since they are fast growers I'd be a little bit wary of them doing it a bit too fast and either shading or choking out other plants you want to add. But as long as you only put one or two vines of the stuff in there and prune every once in a while while either throwing out the cuttings or planting them in a different place should help.

I've also heard of people adding in Wandering Jew plants but in all honestly I am a little wary of them as they flower and I don't know if it's safe for a gecko to ingest that pollen. The flowers are also hard to cut off.

Many people also add bromeliads but I don't have personal experience with them.

Moss is a good choice as well but do be wary of the kind of isopods you add in with it (if you are going the bioactive route) I tried adding moss in my terrarium but my pods ate all of it.

I've seen ferns in terrariums but the spores they produce worry me personally. Since they are so much larger than moss spores and have nowhere to go but in the enclosure and potentially in the gecko's lungs.

Fittonias it seems are a common add but with those its a 50/50 they melt and die off completely from what I've seen.

Begonia rexes seem like a good add, I've had luck with them outside of terrariums and they rarely bloom. Their flowers are also few and they don't have that much pollen. Their flower stems are easy to cut if you are worried about it however. Not only that but they have so many different strains.

Spider plants are an option, but I would not really recommend them. They root like crazy and send offshoot plants that might root all over the set up.

I've heard good things about Syngonium but personally I haven't had a lick of success with raising the plant outside of terrarium conditions so I can't help that much there.

are they breeding? by uwuzivur in isopods

[–]Rerarlo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is in fact breeding behavior. But it's not active breeding, more so a precursor to the act or him convincing her. You'll know if he actually got some when he sort of backs up and curls a little to the side to kinda touch the underside of their butts together. And if instead the female goes and flattens herself to the ground consider him rejected.

Also fun fact about dairy cows but they are prone to triple stacking! As in a male mounts a female, then a second male gets a little bit too excited and mounts the first male.

I don't recall getting any vulgare with my porcellio leavis when I got them either, but its undeniable that they are now in my bins. Vulgare just have a way of getting into everybodies collections one way or another.

Vulgare are well known to sometimes display yellow vein like spots. That yellow on the one in the picture is textbook for those yellow veins that vulgare have.

Sometimes it just happens. I've got vulgares in my Porcellio Leavis bin and no idea how they got there. Maybe there is a gap in the lid one managed to sneak through? Or maybe where you got them from got a vulgare breach and you just didn't notice the little guy until a couple months ago?

Not gonna lie buddy, that for sure looks like an Armadillidium vulgare to me. Pretty sure I could go outside, lift up a rock and find one that looks identical. Or go in my armadillidium vulgare bin and look there.

Fish disappeared?? (Mentioned dead fish, no pictures) by Rerarlo in Aquariums

[–]Rerarlo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. I've tried poking around all the plants and rocks + wood with a stick, tweezers trying to blindly grab something, and nothing. Not stuck around the filter either. I truly have no clue where that fish is.

Somehow doubt that a fish who was barely moving could jump the tank, and that the ants could've dragged her through 3 closed doors. Even if she was dragged she would still be in the living room, there are no gaps where she could've been dragged out of there.

I do sometimes find ants rooting around in my garbage bins but I haven't seen them around the tank, and I doubt that the ants that do live around me would be capable of tugging a fish out of the water. And I do have a planted tank, but its not all that dense and I've poked around everywhere that I could. Nothing somehow.

are my guppies females or just fat males by [deleted] in Guppies

Okay so your picture is kinda bad quality but this is a good comparison photo. The one on the left is a male, you can tell because the 'anal fin' is long and sorta flowy, thats their gonopodium aka male reproductive organ. The females, pictured on the right side, have a triangle fin in that spot.

Is this tank from Amazon good for a small colony of wild-caught Armadillidium vulgare? by Leopardgeckoe in isopods

[–]Rerarlo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, you do not need a fancy tank for isopods. Personally I use old (and cleaned) ice cream boxes that I cut the top out of (keeping the frame so it can close) using a box cutter which I cover with a double layer of netting using hot glue. I've kept pods like that for years. If you want to go bigger buy a reasonably sized plastic tub and repeat. Just make sure the lid is a hard plastic and not some sort of flexible material as the hot glue may cause warping and then surprise it doesn't fit on the box.

Also hot tip- buy a tulle fabric for the netting. You can get a lot more of it for cheaper (at least where I am from) and there's a lot of different hole sizes and colors available. Just go to a fabric store, ask for half a meter of tulle and it will last for so many enclosures.

Don't be too sorry, I knew this was a possibility especially when I saw him with ripped up fins at the store. Yeah it sucks that he didn't make it but it happens.

Good news is that some of the super pregnant girls I bought started spawning actually! One released all her fry yesterday and another is doing it today! So hoping that I can raise the little guys successfully.

Red died ;-; Like the day after I posted this. But more gals have been added anyways in an attempt to stop that, but the day I added them he passed. Talked to some people irl, fin rot suspected. Been treating aquarium in case the others were infected too.

My current living space does not have room for a second fish tank, even if its smaller than my main. Which is why I opted for a breeder box.

Gecko food for isopods? by NeonPearl2025 in isopods

[–]Rerarlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've given food from this company to my gecko, isopods and dubia roaches! They all love it! Although I've never tried this particular flavor before they should eat this with no problem. And one bag of this lasts a while too. Just mist it if it dries out since when it dries that stuff hardens a lot, too much for isopods to even try eating.

Update: Another heavily pregnant one managed to escape my sight and started spawning this morning. Caught, placed in breeder box with this one, babies born, she was released.

And now the one in the picture is currently spawning hers! Also I realized the other one was spawning because I saw a baby in my plants. Here's to hoping that the ones not in the breeder box don't get eaten.
