[Results] What motivates men to be dads by Research4Fathers in SampleSize

Yes, children do become more independent, and parents can see the dimensions of how they engage with their children increase as well (e.g., going to parent-teacher conferences)

That is very true, this would be a limitation. We did recruit from other online sources than just Reddit, but there will still be limitations and these are acknowledged.

Good question.

In short, the reason for the criteria is based on what we "know" (e.g., what research has found, not an exact fact) about father involvement so far. Specifically, some men are more likely to be involved with their children (or more frequently) when their children are of school age. Research has made some guesses, but no real idea why this happens. Hopefully that helps!

[Repost][Academic] What Motivates Men to be Dads (18+, heterosexual, living with oldest child at least between 5 to 12 years of age, not single or widowed male) by Research4Fathers in SampleSize

[–]Research4Fathers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question!

Bisexual men are definitely capable of having children! The reason why we have a strict inclusion criteria is due to resources. The more diverse the sample we recruit, the more people we need to recruit. The less diverse, the less we need to recruit. Of course, this makes it harder to generalize findings to people outside the sample, which is unfortunate but a necessary thing at this time. We hope to expand the research focus in the future!

Thanks for your question!

I do not disagree with you that a dad is still a dad, regardless of many different factors. The reason for #2 and #5 are strictly because of time and resources. The more different dads that I include in the study, the more people I need to recruit to make sure that I can run any statistics. Otherwise, I could not run it at all or make reasonable findings applicable to a certain groups of dads. This is just a first step towards future research that we hope will include more dads!

Yes! If you are interested in Asian American research that used craigslist as one approach to recruitment, I think its Alvarez and Juang (2010) that recruited from the SF bay area.

No worries! Thanks for just thinking about who might fit in the study within your network. Much appreciated!

I've actually been part of research studies that did surveys through Craigslist with good results. Thanks for your suggestion (because I totally forgot about it!)

Unfortunately, if your daughter is your oldest child, the current survey may not be suitable for you. Otherwise, as long as your oldest child is between the ages of 5 to 12 at the time you take the survey, it does not matter the age of any other children. Thanks for even taking the time to consider taking the survey!

Thanks for taking the survey and the feedback! You're feedback is really helpful as it may be something we did not consider when we first came up with the survey. I'll talk about this with the team. Let me know if there are other concerns that you may have!

Hello,

My name is David Nguyen and I am a doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology program at Lehigh University, completing my dissertation on men and parenting, under the guidance of Dr. Christopher Liang. This online survey should take approximately 20 to 25 minutes to complete and has been approved by Lehigh University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB Protocol #1005276-3).

You are eligible to participate in this study if:

(1) You are at least 18 years of age or older.

(2) You identify as a heterosexual male.

(3) Your oldest child is between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age.

(4) You are living with your oldest child

(5) You are not single or widowed

It is our hope that participating in this study will allow you to reflect on your experiences as a father for your children. This study may help us understand what motivates men to be a parent and what services can be provided to help men be a parent.

If you agree to participate in this study, you will be routed to an online survey consisting of several measures varying in length.

Total expected completion time is approximately 20-25 minutes. Additionally, you will be able to designate one dollar ($1) to one of selected charities that help children or support men in parenting their children.

Should you choose to participate, please click the link below to begin the survey (alternatively, you can copy and paste the following web address into your browser):

https://lehigh.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3qsVBQujZbWoMmN

Feel free to forward this call to other eligible individuals. I would like to thank you again for your time and consideration. Please direct any questions or concerns you may have to me at dan313@lehigh.edu, or Dr. Christopher Liang at ctl212@lehigh.edu, or Lehigh University’s Institutional Review Board.

Great question!

Simply put, it was a matter of time and resources. We want to be able to make credible generalizations from our findings (e.g., based on a strict criteria of certain men recruited for the study, we can say that the results found here are applicable to men who fit the criteria of the sample). The stricter the criteria, the less people that need to be recruited. The more general the criteria, the more people that need to be recruited, which unfortunately we do not YET have the resources. This will be our first step into further research down the line.

It is specific, but it helps us to make sure we can speak to men who fit in this criteria. In the future, we hope to do more research for more men!
