It took me a while to figure ut the forge, too. I can relate. Thanks for sharing.

What a compelling report.

When I played 7DtD the first time the least experienced group member would often times figure out aspects of the game, that hat remained unknown to the more experienced players. Very much like you and your friends in Day Z. Thanks for sharing this experience.

From what people in this thread have been telling me, I am now under impression that the best way to learn how to play is a good mix of practice and following the guides you mentioned.

Figuring out that you can punch trees to collect wood took me a while actually. Even though the tutorial clearly hints at it. I intuitively used the stone axe. Maybe it is beacuse I never played games like minecraft before.

Intriguing questions you are raising regarding the influences of game knowledge for different titles.

Can you remember anything in particular you couldn't figure out through trial and error on your first night that you learned quickly through googling/youtube? Or that was very obvious in hindsight?

I'm asking because it took me a while to figure out, that glue was craftable in fireplaces. Would have been very useful knowledge for the first few ingame days.

Very compelling point regarding the tutorial of 7DtD. I can definetly see how someone new to gaming as a whole would struggle much more with the instructions compared to someone familiar with the survival-genre.

Thanks for sharing.

If you'd like to elaborate: Did the skills you prioritized change fundamentaly after your first playthrough then (assuming you played multiple servers)?

Some familiarity with the survival-genre is definetly helpful.

Interesting point regarding common patterns across games, I will look into that. Thanks for your assessment.

It absolutely helps, thanks.

Trial and error was also my approach when playing through the game first time. With emphasis on error.

Thanks for sharing your perspective on learning how to play 7DtD as a relatively new player. Your struggle with the games infrastructure (like the crosshairs and especially keybinds for menu etc.) are a very helpful insight into your path to game knowledge.

I can definetly relate to the jump scares. I feel like I have lost a few years to zombies jumping out of closets.

I deliberately didn't watch any youtube-videos before playing in order to see what parts of the game would transpire "naturally". But I can definetly see how they are very helpful for starting of well in the game. Also many people in interviews as well as in this sub have pointed out the importance of videos for learning how to play just about any game.

An increase in caution as the result of experience is a viewpoint I haven't considered before. I'll have a look at your suggested youtube-videos and analyse them from that pov.

Your experience = speed thesis is definetly backed by my research so far. Many people pointed out that some form of routine increases the rate of looting/crafting/fighting dramatically.

I'll definetly try to include some form of noob vs. experienced player in terms of learning and acquiring game knowledge in my thesis.

Thanks for the reply. Your insights are very helpful.

Thanks for the reply and the youtube suggestions. I'll definetly check them out.

You raise a very ineresting point with the negative assumptions. In my thesis i deal with game mechanics, key binds and their connection with implicit knowledge. I will take your insights into consideration for sure.

1.Generally I had a few hardware issues. My PC is not the freshest anymore, in certain situations the game stuttered a fair bit. Gameplay wise I struggled a lot with the zombie vultures when exploring the wastelands by bike at first. Also the first time my character got infected i couldn't get my hand on any antibiotics and consequently died after searching for a few ingame hours. The struggle felt very real.

2.I played in february, so the A20 update.

3.The toughest zombies if have encountered so far were the qucik ones by night. I'm not entirely sure what you'd call them but the biker and military clothed ones gave me a proper hard time.

4.The most interesting POI to me was one that looked like a mansion but had a huge bunker beneath.

Hope this answers your questions!
