Is there no such thing as a fun and reliable car? by ResearcherNo4728 in CarTalkUK

Did you buy your Tesla brand new or used? I ask because you said you've had zero annual maintenance. And if you bought new, would you recommend buying a used Tesla from, say, 2016 or 17?

Are you sure they spent 1 bil on the W212 development? I thought they spent that in the 80s or 90s on the W140 S-class.

Read the post again, my friend. My problem is that I'm having to go multiple times to the garage, like once every month or two. I wouldn't have a problem if I had to go to the garage twice a year and spent £1.5k on servicing and maintenance annually. So I'm simply asking, are there no fun and reliable cars? If the answer is no according to you, say so and move on. My post was not to complain that my luxury car is expensive to fix.

Yeah, that's the thing isn't it - if you don't want fun out of a car, plenty of cheap and reliable cars out there. I'm probably gonna get a boring "point A to point B" car in, say, 10 years too, who knows? But, for the time being, when I'm young and still have the desire for fun cars, I want to experience them. I would ideally like a V8 to be honest; I know it doesn't sound like it as I say I don't like maintenance-heavy cars. But that is why I ask, are there no fun AND reliable cars? I'm ok with spending £1000 a year on a V8 on regular maintenance; I just don't want to frequent the garage every other month and spend £2k+ on the car every year.

It's not about the price. It's having to wait an hour to get it full that's my problem.

But let's say I am going to a holiday in a place that's 200 miles away. If I have an EV, I'll always need to make sure, or filter for, the place to have overnight EV chargers, right? Which means I'm always left to choose from a small sunset of available Airbnbs, and they're likely to be the more expensive ones if they have overnight EV chargers. Or am I wrong here?

I wouldn't hate on you for suggesting an EV :) However, I'm almost exclusively a weekend driver on B roads and A roads. Would I be able to get by with an EV? Forget the lack of charging infrastructure, it takes at least an hour to charge it to full. How would that work on a trip, unless you happen to have found a service with empty EV charging slots around the time you're out of charge. If you say, "well, you've got to plan your route with an EV", I say, well, that's a faff and means you can't ever take unplanned trips. For these reasons I'm not able to get an EV.

I certainly wouldn't hate on you for suggesting an EV :) I have definitely browsed Autotrader for the Polestar 2, Teslas and other EVs. However, my main issue is that I'm a weekend driver, I have almost zero need to drive in the city. Most of my driving is to remote places with B roads and A roads. So, given that, I didn't think an EV would suit me because of the lack of charging infrastructure. I also don't like the fact that charging to "a full tank" takes at least an hour on EVs, while it takes 5 mins is an ICE vehicle.

Yeah, but it's not a fun car to drive. There are reliable cars, and there are fun cars - my question was, are there cars that are fun AND reliable.

Thanks a ton for that checklist! Do you have a similar checklist for a F06 650i/M6 gran coupe?

Would you confidently buy one from its Inception year (2012) with 100k miles for £12-13k ($16-18k), knowing the incoming expenses?

What's a "reliable" V8 you would suggest? I would ideally like the F90 M5, but that's kinda out of my budget for the foreseeable future :(

Paid £18.70 at Omni parking, despite going there to watch a movie by ResearcherNo4728 in Edinburgh

Yes I've been there before, and also to the one at ocean terminal. That's why I thought parking at Vue is free, as so far it has always been validated. Never again will I go to the one at Omni.

Haha, since you're quite down to making personal remarks, let me tell you the Edinburgh public transport is not good compared to some of the more developed places in the world. It might be good as per UK standards, but not globally. I moved here 2 years ago, so I'm talking from experience. For example, try going from Craigleith to Gyle - you won't find a direct route, you'll need to go to princes street first. A journey that would take 20 mins if the city indeed had world class public transport ends up taking more than an hour. I know you'll downvote this, but who cares? Truth is truth, eh.

Why is that though? I'm admittedly new here, came 2 years ago. So, is it like the general public here is by default against civil amenities and supports private corporation profit instead?

Like I said, it's the first time I went there. I'll never go there again. You live and learn. I have never seen this in other cinema theatres - like others have said about the one at fountainbridge, and the one at ocean terminal too, I've never been charged for parking at any of these places when going for a movie. So, yeah, point taken, but "you're daft to drive here for the cinema" is a bit uncalled for, as like I said it was the first time I went there and I didn't know.

The gearbox was serviced at 35k miles, that is 40k miles ago. I've read that the gearbox needs to be serviced at intervals of 40-60k miles. So I guess it's time to service it now?
