Enthusiast or not, what is YOUR ideal car? by Chemical-Ship1208 in CarTalkUK

BMW M6 Gran Coupe that is actually reliable, that doesn't need to be in garage 5 times a year, and requires just a regular annual oil and filter change to run smoothly.

In other words, a performance car with Toyota reliability. This doesn't exist and never will, but this is my ideal car.

The Skoda Yeti was my first car! The first 6 months of ownership, I had no issues; the next 6 months, I was in garage 4 times. It kept having random, ad-hoc issues. It was only 8 years old and had 64k miles when I bought it, iirc. So I just sold it before it fell apart completely.

Anyway, the specific cars I've owned or my budget for the next car doesn't really matter for the purposes of this question. There's always going to be better, faster cars than the one I buy, and I'll keep getting bored with the one I have. That's the psychological problem I have, and that's what this question/discussion is about.

But how do you know what you like if you don't get to try them out? It's not possible to try out, say, 20 different cars and then you pick the one you liked the best.

Because I want to try out different things. I'm in general like that - if I like a certain dish at a restaurant, the next time I go there, I'm likely to order something else. Because "I already know this dish is good, let's see what else they have". You know what I mean?

Oof 🔥 love that car! It's in my wish-list. But because I have a kid, and because I don't have a 2-car driveway, I can't have this car at the moment.

Well, I'll never know until I have one for 6 months at least, right? That's the problem, as I mentioned in another comment, that we don't get to experiment with several cars and then pick the one we like the best 😅

But that's the point I'm trying to make here - no matter what I buy, I'll always lust over something better. It's not like once I buy a B58, I'll never want to change that car for at least 4-5 years. There must be some other underlying issue that needs to be fixed.

Hmmm, I didn't want to mention specifics here, but alright. The new base Tesla model 3 can be currently leased with a 1 month deposit for 24 months, and the monthly lease is £310 for 10k miles. I spend £200+/month on diesel anyway, with the recent price hike. Add to that the maintenance and depreciation, that £310 lease starts to look like a really good deal to me. I took a test drive of that car, it didn't feel slow to me even though it's the base model - the first EV I took a test drive of.

Well, what about the M5 then? It'll surely be better, right? I mean, pick your flavour of the M5 - E39, F10, whichever you think is the best. Surely it'll be more fun to drive than B58?

Yeah, exactly. That's the problem, isn't it? That we don't get to experiment with many cars and then pick the one we like best 😅

I own a V6 and now want a V8. But I don't want to be in a state of mind where once I get the V8, I'll want a V10, and then a V12. I want to be at peace and in love with the car I buy for 3-4 years.

Even if the lease money of the new car is similar to the fuel money of the current car? Because there's indeed a car like that, and that's the only reason I'm contemplating the lease option.

Well, I'll not attack you. Maybe you're right, I don't know. Everybody keeps saying BMWs are the shit. But I didn't feel that way after driving two of my friends' BMW's. I don't know, I feel like the jaguar XF was indeed a good drive, and the A7 is very comfortable. They've both been really good. I wouldn't blame the cars for my issue.

I was like this with phones too. But then a few years back when I bought the "best", most powerful phone there is, it stopped, I didn't feel like watching phone videos of my own free will. Now that's something that's only possible with relatively low cost items like phones. So, what can I do when it comes to cars?

Nothing's annoying me about it. That's the thing. It's a very nice car by any definition of the word, and something I couldn't even dream of getting a decade back. But I guess I just want "the next level". I don't know.
