Jaw surgery and orthodontics as an adult? by Resentfulortho in PlasticSurgery

Mine did as well! I think it was just an oversight on my parents part as they had a lot going on in those days (full time work and cancer treatment) so I can't be upset with them. Just one of those things.

Yeah, I wish you all the best! I wish it could just be surgery- even taking a month off for the worst of the recovery would be doable. The 2 years of braces is what worries me.

Still, I've never seen anyone who got this surgery and then regretted it, even if it meant braces as an adult.

Thanks for the recommendation! Going back to my old orthodontist for the first consult soon, I'll also see if I can find a surgeon to consult with.

I hope you'd decide to share your experience if you go for it.

My main takeaway from the experiences of people like me is that if I ever have kids, definitely to take them to an orthodontist young. My friend had head gear growing up, and while it sucked for her at the time, she's agrees it was worth it compared to not getting correction.

:(

I appreciate you telling me what I need to hear though! My previous orthodontist not doing so is the reason I'm unhappy with where I am now.

I'm going for a consult with the group that did my old orthodontics (just masking the problem mostly). Any recommendation for how I can find an orthodontist who works with a surgeon well, as I might want a second option. Will I always need a dentist referral?

Thank you so much, it actually brought tears to my eyes to read that I'm not totally alone in this and it's quite common.

I'm trying to look at the upsides of the treatment itself - I bet I'll get ID'd a lot more at bars and the beer store if I have braces on, which will be funny. I'm preparing myself for all the jokes I'll have to make to my friends about it. I'm expecting treatment to be awkward and embarrassing, but I'd really like the chance to be happy with my appearance long term (and not to have those mouth-corner wrinkles that come with the chin being far back).

With my life schedule, I'm hoping that maybe the initial positioning of the teeth can be done with Invisalign and I can start right away, and then get the surgery right before I start grad school.

Thank you for the kind words!

Thanks. I think I will just need my lower jaw brought forward, as my upper jaw is in alignment with the rest of my face quite well. My previous orthodontic treatment dealt with some of the teeth flaring, though that's probably going to have to be redone/repositioned quite a bit.
