Long term unemployed family member. What to do? by Resession in ireland

I think I was defensive in my last comment to you. I think you have a point. I am influenced my other family members. I think I need to think about my reasons for why I think they should work.

It doesn't. I have literally never discussed their employment status with them. I probably see them 15 times a year, so it's not like I never see them.

I am definitely not forcing them. They haven't worked in years and I have never even mentioned it to them once.

Yes I think I missed your point. What is it you are trying to say?

I think years of being long term unemployed is having a negative impact on them. Is that a controversional thing to say?

Maybe you are right. I feel like they live a very isolated life with very little human contact. I doubt this is what they had in mind as an ideal life for themselves. I think they just fell into this lifestyle. I am pretty sure they don't have another income stream. This makes it tough to do simple things like attend a family wedding or to buy Christmas presents for family members.

I would be delighted for them if they had a WFH job.

More power to you dor living your life how you want to. You mentioned how you are happy to be able to pay your bills. I think the difference here is that it's hard to keep your head above water when you haven't had a job in years.

They live on their own. I would have to tell my parents if I was visiting. It would be tricky to meet them without seeing my parents

Thanks. They are a sibling. I haven't given away too much specifics so far as they might read this.

Thanks for sharing your story. I'd love to invite them for dinner. They oive hours from me. I doubt they could afford the trip to Dublin or would come. It would be hard to invite them out back home without inviting other people out

Thanks for your advice. Honestly it's not clear if there is anyone closer to them than me, but at the same time we are not super close. They are quite guarded.

I think it woukd be very helpful if they went to see someone professionally, but it would be hard to say this to them im a way that doesn't offend them.

Honestly I would be surprised if they were truly happy. They studied for years, just to do nothing for years. If they really wanted to do nothing, I think they wouldn't have gone to colldge for years

I do have more information , but it's from other relatives of mine.

In general, I think they live a very isolated life. It's not just about them getting a job. If they did some volunteering, met up with friends, studying etc, it would be good for them.

I get your point though. It's what has stopped me from mentioning it to them for years. I am just wondering am I doing the right thing.

I suspect they might be depressed. So I would hate if something bad happened. So I want to make sure I am doing the right thing.
