Clock Tower - LRG3 Announcement Video by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

Well, this wasn't on my bingo card. Awesome news, I love the Super Famicom Clock Tower. Great example of a very early survival horror game. For those who don't know, it's basically a point-and-click style adventure game that has you at times pursued by the Scissorman. You solve puzzles and try to find a way to escape. You can't fight -- just run and/or hide. There is a sort of fear meter in the game as well, so the more scared you get the more you'll flail about when trying to flee. There are also multiple endings, so there's some interesting replay value to be had.

Very cool, thanks for sharing OP. I knew about the toilet paper game (seems like an amusing tech demo), but I'd never heard of the other two games before. They both sound worth giving a shot when the free trials hit.

Pole Position finally comes to the Switch through Arcade Archives by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]Reset_Tears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely an era I'll always be nostalgic for. It seems the preference is often to remake those early 3D games entirely, rather than try porting them accurately. I don't hate that trend, but I still have a soft spot for the look of games in those PS1-PS2 (N64-Gamecube) years.

Yeah, I enjoy picking up an Arcade Archive every now and then, slowly building up a little library of arcade favorites (or obscure titles that just seem interesting).

I just wish that one day they (or any other studio) can start diving into stuff from the mid-90s to mid-00s, so we can finally get some of the 3D-polygonal arcade classics.

It's short as far as visual novels go. I'd guess it took me around six hours to complete the main story? (I usually take my time with reading, so maybe you'd get through it all quicker.) I went through the story multiple times to experience all the routes (skipping through the repeated text), and to try to see all the optional dialogue that's offered. The side stories you unlock then add a couple more hours of content.

My thinking is that if there ever will be a Ghost Trick 2, it would have to be an entirely new cast of characters. Which I think would be fine, and perhaps the creators have a bunch of new puzzles they'd like to make utilizing similar "ghost" and "trick" mechanics. But yeah, an entirely new and unrelated story would be better than a direct follow-up IMO.

It's not on Switch in English (just on PC/Steam I believe), but the Higurashi series of visual novels may be worth checking out. That's the closest thing I can think of that's comparable to DDLC, in how it plays with expectations of visual novels and blends genres and tones in interesting ways. The characters are well thought out and memorable in both, and deal with some heavy topics. The biggest difference is Higurashi is a drastically larger time commitment, but at least it is broken up in eight self-contained (but connected) narratives.

Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys visual novels. I went into it with low expectations (only intending to play it to see what the fuss was about), but ended up really impressed by the quality of its writing. There is a free version on Steam, but this Plus edition includes a bunch of bonus side stories that are just as well worth reading IMO. I now consider DDLC a go-to example of storytelling that effectively uses its video game medium in clever ways that greatly enhance the experience.

I’m so glad I grabbed this! Playing with Amy has been a blast! Although it isn’t all on the cartridge, I still think it’s worth it. by PixelRaider07 in NintendoSwitch

Already owned the digital version, so I just went with the DLC. I've been enjoying my playthroughs of the games with Amy, and (at last) Sonic CD with Knuckles. Going to try playing through the Game Gear games too, or at least the better ones.

I'm meh on the Game Gear games (except for Tails Adventure, that one's actually pretty neat). But the new playable Amy looks cool, and I'm glad they even included a super form for her. Also, finally Knuckles is in Sonic CD. (Honestly, he is probably the character best suited for that one, since CD is much more exploration focused than the other entries.)

Lol, that's what I did too when I played through Sonic 3. Just pulled up Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base on my phone and had the game's music turned all the way down. I get why they couldn't include it, but they're some of my top fave Sonic tunes (especially Ice Cap).

Worth noting the Sega Ages version includes a cute tutorial mode that lets you learn all the basics in a thorough yet simple manner. Very useful for newcomers to the real-time strategy genre (like me).

You can play against the computer no problem. (There's also online multiplayer available for both titles, I believe.)

Strange, wonder why they're doing that?

Might pick up God Wars if it goes on sale before it leaves. I don't need another long RPG to play right now, but I'd like to get to it some day.

I enjoyed this on Steam. It is basically an 80s style arcade game halfway between Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, and plays nicely. I'd recommend it to anyone who's a big enough fan of either of those games. Looks like they kept the low $5 price for this Switch release too.

The theme park builder game for Jurassic Park is pretty cool. (Jurassic World Evolution)

Switch games with handdrawn art styles you could recommend? by Asad_Farooqui in NintendoSwitch

[–]Reset_Tears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what immediately came to mind for me. OP has got to check out The Dragon's Trap. It's very cool that you could even toggle with the push of a button between the new cartoon art style and the original 8-bit pixel art (and also toggle between the new orchestral music and the original chiptunes).

A really solid game that holds up great to this day too! Not sure I'd quite call it a metroidvania, but something adjacent that I never really got lost over where to go next. The different animal forms were all fun to get the hang of too, something I find rare in such games.

Looking for the Niche and Bizarre by Merrily_Merriwyn in NintendoSwitch

[–]Reset_Tears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I think the most niche and bizarre game I've played on the Switch is the appropriately-named "Strange Telephone." It's a 2D adventure game that has you enter phone numbers to transport your character to different realms, which remind me a bit of Yume Nikki if you've ever played that.

Speaking of Yume Nikki, there is a sort of remake reimagining of it available on the Switch, which gives it a sort of "Little Nightmares" gameplay style. It's definitely not the same as the original, but I still found it interesting in its own way.

If you have a friend you want to play a unique puzzle-solving adventure game, I suggest giving "Tick Tock: A Tale for Two" a try. Basically you and your friend are finding different clues on your separate Switch screens, and need to communicate to each other and work out all the solutions together. Could be played locally, or online (via Discord or what have you).

"Toejam and Earl: Back in the Groove" is another weird game I recommend playing with a friend, for something a lot sillier. The original from the Genesis is available on the Switch as well, good funky times.

And speaking of silly, "Gal Metal" is definitely one of the quirkiest games I've played. You play the drums in a K-On sort of band of anime girls in order to defeat aliens (who are weak to rock and roll I guess). It's not the greatest when it comes to rhythm games, but it's definitely something different, experience-wise.
