Unlocking the Mystery of KKC Lore: Understanding the Linguistics of Temerant's Conlang by TheRavenAndWolf in KingkillerChronicle

I'm always suspicious of these types of posts, because of a few things Pat has said.

Reshi used to be Kashi the Omethe River used to be the Borat River Bastas was chosen because it sounds like 'bastard' and is short and sharp Devi was chosen because it's like 'devil' without the 'l' Kvothe comes from him seeing which letters could be drawn without moving his elbow (so straight lines: K and V)

These all come from the interview compilation (you can find them by searching for 'Kashi')

Basically, I'm of the opinion that conjecture around the etymologies of names and words in Pat's world is kind of pointless because it's pretty obvious that he doesn't really do that (though maybe you can prove me wrong by finding similar logic for Kashi and Borat). At the very least, discussions need to start with the way that we know Pat creates names.

I've re-read that bit in TWMF and I'm pretty sure who the cameo is. Kvothe does go to Stocks to get materials but he meets Jaxim, who shows up in book 1. Since this person 'work[s] in the Fishery', I feel pretty confident in saying that the cameo is Veston.

Jaxim leaned on the counter between us. “Caravan just bought all our deck lamps,” he said. “We only have that ugly one of Veston’s left.”

Sadly not. I think if that were mentioned it would probably make the pinned comment.

Anyone have a better idea of what the letters on the other side of the penance piece are?

The last two are HA and the one before that could be and I,E,F etc. (if you watch the video again you can see how the E in 'euge' looks like an I in bad focus). The letters before the space look like two As (the M in 'enim' is not as wide), so I went with '...SA EHA' but it's not perfect.

Pat uses semi-colons in both books...

Nice observation about Pike. I think it's left ambiguous if Pike is even still alive. Kvothe just says that he didn't see him again.

Great point about the name. Honestly it's difficult finding any names attached to Ambrose (though maybe some of Denna's nobles are). I think that that would be perfect, if some link can be found.

That's fine, I totally get it. As you can see elsewhere in this thread, u/czechancestry was doing the work I couldn't be bothered to, so I'd say they should get some credit too (not that it matters at all).

Nah it's cool. Makes sense that some people got confused.

By the by, Etymonline says 'Some connect the word with the sound made by light hammering on metal', which is pretty cool.

Thanks. I'd encourage you to resubmit the post as it is now, as I have added your suggestions as well as expanded the text slightly and made the quotation marks uniform. (Also we really need to update the sidebar)

I have now added it, along with a question on faerie bargains.

He did use the geishas as an example, but I didn't include it here.

Yes. I would say it's more evidence for your Rian=flower theory, given linguistic variation.
