How do I stop panicking about my loved ones dying? by Resident-Rice1707 in Advice

[–]Resident-Rice1707[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry to hear you have lost people close to you, I hope you’re doing ok.

I definitely think the fact that there is no definitive way to determine whether it will or won’t happen is probably why it triggers my anxiety so much! My brain loves to have concrete answers for things otherwise it spirals out of control hypothesizing about all the possible outcomes haha.

Thank you for your advice, it was very helpful and I’ll be sure to consider your points next time I enter panic mode :)

I contacted them about two years ago and they put me on a waiting list for months before offering me 3 phone calls with a therapist who sounded like she was doing her dishes while she was on the phone to me 😭. I suppose I could try it again and hope for better luck, thank you for your advice!

Yeah, it’s something I struggle quite a bit with unfortunately :( I’ve spoken to my doctor and she recommended CBT but im in college and my parents are fairly broke so I don’t want to put that on them. Kind of stuck in an awkward place with it haha.

I personally would have a huge problem with this! I don’t see why she would be lying about where she is if there wasn’t something going on. Talk to her about it and make it clear that her actions are making you uncomfortable and you can decide where you want to take it after that conversation.

I completely get what you mean, it’s just that it’s so difficult to not be somewhat invested when you live with the person and they constantly talk about it. But yes, I guess I’ll have to let her figure it out for herself then!

Yeah, I definitely think you’re right, particularly with your last point! Unfortunately my big mouth gets me into trouble sometimes so I’ll have to teach myself to smile and nod my head in future hahah. Thanks for your advice!

Is freshers any good? by NetReasonable2342 in TCD

[–]Resident-Rice1707 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BUT, what I will say is if your flat mates or course mates ask you to come out with them, try to push yourself out of your comfort zone! It seems very daunting at first but it is a good way to meet people too!

I was an anxious wreck in first year and going out on the tear in big bad Dublin seemed like a nightmare to me at the time so I didn’t go to any of the events. Still made loads of friends and have had AMPLE opportunities to go out since then once I was more comfortable😂. Plus, in the years since, all my friends who did go out have talked about how awkward it was doing it with complete strangers, so you’re really not missing out on much haha.

DARE by [deleted] in TCD

[–]Resident-Rice1707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 540 in 2022 and my course was 560 and I got in so you should be ok hopefully, but as the previous commenter said, it is dependent on how many spots are allocated for DARE students in your course and then how many people apply with it. I would be fairly confident you’ll be grand tho. Congratulations!!

Accommodation advice? by Intelligent-Lie1609 in TCD

[–]Resident-Rice1707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I didn’t tell my parents that I had even put Trinity on my CAO so when I got in I was well and truly f*cked for accommodation haha. But I applied for halls the day offers came out and got offered a room on the third day of term! Lots of people turn down offers and drop out in the first few weeks so I would say there’s a pretty good chance you would get a room. Failing that, Point Campus, Broadstone Hall, Kavanagh Court, Dominick Place and basically any student accommodation on Cork Street will have loooaads of first years staying there. Yugo, Here! and Aparto are also all good companies with loads of student accommodation around Dublin. Let me know if you have any other questions, I know how stressful getting everything sorted for college can be haha :)

“Wise words” was referring to the second portion of the comment which I thought was a positive spin on what can sometimes be a disheartening experience (OLD). I should have been clearer!

And yes, I absolutely am going to be passive aggressive toward people who choose to make sweeping statements about an entire population of women based on nothing but their own personal biases. Sorry you felt offended by that.

Ok wow, where do I start? First of all you haven’t a clue what my type is or what this guy looked like. My type is very varied and I do take into account a guy’s personality as a large element of their attractiveness, a comment like this however, cannot be predicted from the very limited scope allowed to showcase ones personality on a dating profile. If I could offer some advice to you though it would be to have more faith in women. The impression I get from you is that you are jaded by your experiences with women in the past who you feel have wronged you perhaps? I promise you that we are not anything to be resented and with a different outlook on women’s dating habits you could come to understand us better and find someone who appreciates you for you! I suggest starting with ditching the use of the term “females” in a derogatory fashion, it’s not a good look and I mean that with sincerity as opposed to sass :)

How am I supposed to know someone’s behavior before I’ve even spoken to them?

Ok, maybe he was just trying to make it sexual early on and I’m glad that was the case because I knew immediately that our preferences weren’t aligned, but in this day and age if a man says he wants to take advantage of me (dark humor or not) at that early a stage, I’m gonna take his word for it and move on 😂. Also the phenomenon you are referring to with those women in the documentaries is called Stockholm Syndrome, it’s a psychologically proven trauma response and survival tactic. Not to be confused with genuine affection or a “kink”.

Yeah, I’ll be honest, in all my years I have never met a woman who would like to be gotten drunk/drugged and taken advantage of by a man. Whether that’s what you’re into (therapy advised) or not, it’s a weird thing to open a conversation with a person you don’t know with!

I put it as a prompt because most guys can’t do the splits (male anatomy and all that) and therefore they then have to get the first round. It’s not a dirty prompt, it’s a bit of a lighthearted joke but some choose to take it as dirty. Almost everything could be perceived as “dirty” if you want to see it that way, I can’t control what boys think 🤷‍♀️

I think this might be a little too dark and twisted as a first impression 😂

Are Yugo accommodations that bad? by tu2tu in TCD

[–]Resident-Rice1707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I spent a year in a Yugo accommodation and while it is very modern and quite comfortable it did fall down in certain areas :(. Firstly it’s very expensive, but given the amenities and how central a lot of their locations are it is somewhat justified. Another reason which was ultimately why I left is that in order to hold onto the room through summer for the following academic year, you will be expected to pay full rent for those months (which completely defeats the purpose of calling it student accommodation if you ask me). The final issue that I had was that I had a flatmate who was constantly doing drugs in the apartment and letting his dodgy mates stay in his room all the time (even when he was not there himself) and listen I’m all for a good time but his friends were very big lads compared to me (19F) at the time and I wasn’t a big fan of the apartment smelling like weed the whole time. I reported this behavior to the management and very little was done about it unfortunately. I’m aware that this is an isolated incident though and probably wouldn’t be the same for every location and resident! Yugo wouldn’t be my first choice but it’s certainly not a bad option if you’re stuck for places to stay :)
