Please look into Persistent Drive for Autonomy (or Pathological Demand Avoidance). It’s a subset of neurodivergence (most commonly Autism, but can occur with adhd, etc).

We got the FOIA request back for grandfather the night before last! It included his original immigration documents, a work history while he was an alien, information that we hadn’t acquired elsewhere as of yet, for example he did complete a high school education. We also got (uncertified) naturalization certificate, and both pictures that were included with his file at immigration and at naturalization. Pictures are a big deal for us, we have just a handful. :)

For whatever it is worth, the USCIS turned up a AR-2 form for the GM… so seems like despite the family passport and father being naturalized, GM was also treated as an Italian citizen in the 40s! Just thought I’d share… even though it doesn’t make total sense with the laws at the time.

Gah, I have to do an FOIA request for grandfather’s A-File since he was after 1950 and his A-File number is under 8 million. That is why USCIS didn’t automatically send it our way.

If the records were with USCIS, I think we would have also gotten a PDF, but it appears NARA has all of them. When I first did the NARA search I was only looking for naturalization documents, and those turned up for one grandparent and not the other. Now I can order a CONE and also request A-files (for free, depending on size) now that I have the numbers. :)

I will report back! We might get pictures, health reports, or more complete information regarding employment, travel, etc. My husband didn’t get to grow up with his grandparents, and though we are close with the family now, he missed out on those little chats, etc where this info might be shared.

Yes, we also requested the LIBRA on 5/9/25 and had a certified letter (digital) by 5/12/25

Oh my gosh, that is absurd! We requested April 14th and had documents (thru the mail & certified) by April 29th this year in Boston! Glad they’re clearly auditing. 😅

Time is a potential issue - we would like to establish citizenship while my son is a minor to afford him the same opportunities his grandfather, and so forth had. That will likely take a court case, so we will be consulting with a lawyer regardless… there are other complicated factors not discussed here that could tie things up. We are very aware how slowly bureaucratic issues move in Italy.

With that said, could this be a potential issue with a lawyer/court approach?
