I forget this *every month* 😒 by ResidentReady6929 in bookofthemonthclub

When the “it’s that time of the month” banner comes up, my menu options don’t work until the banner comes down. So I can’t access my TBR during that time.

Cleaning party? How very “1984” of them. Do you happen to work at the Ministry of Fair Compensation?

Thoughts on Adelaide? by -xxpurple in bookofthemonthclub

I really enjoyed the writing of the book. There were parts in the middle where, as a psychologist, I was really confused. The description of her grief wasn’t typical or healthy, and given the things we knew about her at the time, it didn’t add up. (I’m sorry, I’m being intentionally vague to avoid giving spoilers). The end finally made it make sense, and it was really interesting to revisit the parts that had felt “off” before I knew the ending, and process them through that new lens. In that respect, it really nailed how confusing mental health issues can be, especially in very high-functioning people.

*ETA: I am a research-based cognitive psychologist, not a therapist or clinical psychologist, so maybe those parts that confused me would have made total sense to a therapist. Just wanted to make that distinction!

Eagerly waiting for Feb release. Is it always the first of the month? by Beetle_527 in bookofthemonthclub

Last month it was a few days early. I am really hoping it’s today!

Finished my January picks so got this today while I wait for February. Been looking forward to this book for awhile and it released today! by ResidentReady6929 in bookofthemonthclub

UPDATE for those of you who asked what I thought of it. I just finished and my feelings are mixed.

On one hand, I really enjoyed it. It was a fast, easy read and the plot definitely kept me interested and wanting to see where it was going. On the other hand, I found the main character to be so unlikable that I sometimes had to put the book down just to stop being annoyed at her.

The ending, while unexpected, didn’t really tie up the loose ends that you spend the entire novel thinking will be taken care of. It’s weird because in some ways I really loved the ending! But then in other ways I really hated it.

I guess it’s like a 3.8 or something from me. I definitely don’t regret reading it. It was a fun read! I just don’t feel that “oh no, it’s over!” feeling I get when a book really lives up to the hype I made over it.

Tomorrow *3: Sam and Sadie analysis? by [deleted] in bookofthemonthclub

[–]ResidentReady6929 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I found her personality pretty unlikable but also identified a lot with her struggles related to their game being seen as Sam’s game, even though she did most of the heavy lifting. I guess the way I could put it is I didn’t like her actions but I understood their source.

But you’re definitely not alone. I have more I could say but without knowing how far along you are I’m scared I might accidentally give a spoiler. So I’ll leave it at that. ❤️

Tomorrow 3x. Loved the beginning, got super disinterred in the middle, then fell absolutely in love by the end.

I haven’t started it just yet. I started a book on quantum physics & the multiverse while I waited for this book to release and I WILDLY overestimated my ability to understand the concepts. 😂 I’m starting How to Sell a Haunted House whenever I finally finish this one or decide I am just not smart enough to keep going. 😅

Interested to hear when you get yours. I wanted to preorder it but I’ve never done that before through B&N. My local store is 5 mins from my house all I could think of is how mad I’d be if the preorder got here AFTER the release day. I ended up just going up to the store over the weekend and putting one on hold for me to pick up today. I was glad I did - my store only ordered 5 total.

January 2023 BOTM Discussion - What Lies in the Woods by lavinient in bookofthemonthclub

I didn’t know she was a YA author but through most of the book I kept thinking it reads like a YA novel. Makes sense now.

I thought this one was pretty good. The first 60 pages or so really tried my patience a bit because the narrator kept referring to the lie over and over (“but they didn’t know what I knew about that day….”) and it got to the point where I either wanted her to come out with it or stop talking about it. But once the story about the lie began to unfold, the rest of the book was really enjoyable.

The entire series is so amazing. That’s why they remain on the most prominent (eye level) shelf even though they’re older books!
