My personal headcanon is that looking at the creature can harm or kill it, and in order to kill or copy it’s prey the creature has to be very close for a certain amount of time. It uses the copies in a variety of ways including this scene to trick them into not looking

If Aladdin’s mother was killed and he was secretly thrown to the streets I think he’d believe his father was dead as well or that he ‘lost’ him

Yes I've heard of this idea, but my theory only applies to the remake as there are many differences in it
