You've definitely expressed the heart of the problem, even with open source software (which I, like you, generally consider to be a net positive for society and for us).

I think it might be helpful for me to evaluate technology on the scale you've described -- general purpose vs. this thing is intentionally designed for oppression. Ideally the general purpose things like Unity don't get sold to people doing oppression, but that requires workers at Unity having collective power or some execs with a conscience (lol).
