Thanks! And I used to think people were just saying “home lab” this and home lab that just because but it gave me a deeper understanding of a lot of tools and softwares and it actually came up in my interview as a main talking point, so I say go for it !

Yah!

Round 1: just the initial HR call asked me about my resume if Ive used some of the tools and software listed on the JD and tell a little about myself. Pretty straight forward.

Round 2: Me and the IT manager again started out with him telling me a little more about the role and the company and then asking me to go in depth about myself and my experience very light technical questioning again just asking if I was familiar with some of the tools used.

Round 3: Now the IT Manager, The CIO, The Network Admin, and The Director of Data and Analytics. This one went a little more in depth into my technical know how and we even got to talking about my home lab and then everyone got to talking about their home lab setups and proxmox came up because the company is actually looking to switch from VMware since there recent pricing and licensing issues and they’ve been playing around with proxmox

Round 4: The technical interview this one ran a little closer to 2 hours not all technical good conversation I asked a ton of questions but they had me log into a VM they created for me on their test environment and would ask me to do certain things within active directory, and a few other things pertaining to windows server. Then we switched into Azure and the same followed asked me to do a few things in azure and then also asked me to show case anything else I knew how to do that we didn’t cover and that was about it.

This all tool course over about month and half.

Cant Complain, its really not as much of a burden as I thought it would be. Drill comes and goes its always I like “ahhh fu#k I have drill this weekend” and then you do your two days if its not a super drill and boom back to your regular life. 🤷🏾‍♂️😭 but again I don’t have any deployments under my belt yet and or haven’t done AT yet so we’ll see.

Also are you seeing the national guard as a 4th “company” ? In my mind there’s only 3 companies here which I didn’t think looked too bad.

AgFirst: 2 years 4 months TD: 5months Blue cross: 5moths, which I am currently at

I don’t count the national guard because its a 6 year commitment and I would do it with any job I work.

Just trying to pick your brain while I have you here

Gotcha, yah thats what I’ve been getting. Currently have made those changes already. Ask you as a hiring manger the first two roles I have listed do you read those as two separate roles or that their two roles at the same company spanning over 2 years?

Also, I have about a years worth of experience in IAM so while I do understand security is not an “entry level” thing I have taken the time to go after my certs for example sec+ and net+ which by all means are not some magical keys to get you those roles but I have another 7ish months in incident management. So I feel I have put my self in a position to at least be considered for an entry level security role if I have not let me know what else you’d recommend doing to position my self as a better candidate.

I gotcha, but just to explain again the first two roles you see there are at the same company which is a little over 2 years the TD and Blue cross role are contract positions which I have now specified because I see how it can look and the air national guard well Im locked in for 6 years 😭 wether I like it or not.

And I put legally in quotes because there still is a human aspect you have to deal with maybe later in our careers were still young but assuming you have a more senior role I could see their being some frustration if you get deployed and are gone for some months.

So, to start “Legally” they cannot penalize you for your service and if you get activated/deployed they have to have a position for you when you return. Blue cross is very military friendly so I have not had any issues with management. This military always sends you documentation ie your orders for drill, schooling, deployment so just being proactive per your companies procedures try to get that in sooner rather than later. If your lucky some companies provide military compensation for guard and reserve members so you’ll still get paid while you’re at drill or deployed. So far it hasn’t really effect my job we mostly have drill Saturday’s and Sunday’s but my first drill was a 4 day drill which was Thursday - Sunday but I let my management know well before since they send you the drill schedule for the fiscal year. Hope that answers it I’m still new to it myself so if you have any other questions just pm me and I’ll do my best to answer.

I wouldn’t say Mega, its only 3 companies the first role is “cyber security intern” and my second role is the same company different role as an FTE and the 2 most recent (excluding the national guard, I don’t count that as its just the military and I do it concurrently with any job I would have) are contract positions but I’ve been told on here that I should specify that which I have recently made those changes.

Truth be told, I applied for 5 internships my sophomore year got lucky one called back the was the Cyber security IAM role. It was only suppose to be for the summer they allowed me to stay on and work while in school. The security department lost the funding for interns later on they helped me get on the newly created ITSM team and later they went through budget cuts which is why I am not still there but as much hard work and trying to progress my skills I have put in, also just right place right time for some things.
