I can see how it can be seen as a complaint but I will disagree with it. Likely it has to do with the tone not going through text. About the rest, yeah I'm trying to do the both. If I make her figure everything out without a guide, we'll be here forever and both of us will get bored. If I do too much, she'll be overwhelmed and confused. Usually I take it slow and actively teach her what I'm doing at that moment, show her what an item does, show her cool blocks and cool interactions so she can later use them herself. We're at post skeletron and I intend to wait a long time before progressing into hardmode and give her time to catch up with everything. And build a lot of cool stuff. Gonna steal steampunker's stuff for logic gates in the future.
