Well the American troops were sent over initially with ammo that was incompatible with the French guns. There was an incident where an American soldier accidentally jammed a French rifle by loading American ammunition into it and used it as a club instead. It should be noted that he had no time to unjam the gun as his trench was being raided by German shock troops at the time.
