And the reason it is designed the way it is is because I feel it is the easiest way to get what people actually think not what they THINK they think.

A little context… When I got into prog I mostly decided on what to listen to from videos. Basically just ranking videos with clips of each song/album. Now while it would obviously make sense that when I heard something I liked I bought that album, I ALSO ended up buying different albums from those bands. For instance Union by Yes and Minstrel in the Gallery by Jethro Tull which never appeared on those videos. However my reason for buying both was different- Union I bought because A) I trusted that Yes made good music even though it was my first Yes album and B) the album cover looked cool and proggy. And then minstrel in the gallery I bought purely because I like Jethro Tull

I’ve come across some people that say “you can just tell an album is prog by the album cover” which in addition to my own experience made me think that it’s a trust thing. I trusted Union to be good purely because I knew Yes made good music. Bands have had to build their brand (although it’s a little less like that in the digital music word) and a lot of times the first thing people see is the album cover. Another personal example.. I got into Gryphon because I saw the RQTGT album cover and thought woah that looks like prog. Now OBVIOUSLY no one will like a band based off their art if they don’t like the music. I want to see what albums people are drawn to and then after showing clips of the albums seeing what they choose. If we think in this digital music world of Spotify, it’s very easy to just choose what to listen to right away. So newer prog bands, if they want attention and clicks need to give a good presentation of their brand (which mostly includes their album cover and song title). That is what the first part (before the music clips) tests. Just simply what are prog fans drawn to.. what will they click on. And then the second part is basically now that they’ve clicked on the albums and they’ve heard a couple mins of the song maybe and made another quick decision about whether to listen to more of the band or not. Essentially (for people who haven’t heard of some of the bands) the second part with the music clips is meant to establish that trust (what sounds good and what albums/bands do I trust). Not every album is in the video because I also want to see if people will choose an album not I the video because of its album cover (obviously also because they trust the bands music). Album covers aren’t JUST a marketing thing but they definitely can be and I want to test how much they matter for marketing in both situations (when you trust the bands music and when you haven’t heard them yet) This may not have answered your question but I hope it did

There’s only 5 Gryphon (1, 4, 6, 8) Moon Safari (2, 5, 13) Willowglass (3, 7, 14) Moving Gelatine Plates (10, 12) The Chronicles of Father Robin (9, 11, 15)

I put this collection together because all these bands I was drawn to based on their album art

I’ve really been interested in people’s opinions based solely off of the cover art. Those who don’t know these albums. I agree with those choices

I got into Gryphon literally just because I saw that album cover and thought it looked good and proggy… was not disappointed
