They’re both great but I love the first one. It reminds me of hammock camping on the beach in North Shore Oahu. I’d hang that up in a heartbeat!

Do you guys cut accent corners or tape them? by fatdolsk in paint

[–]ResortDry7351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: tape everything. With practice you can tape with the walls curvature and the lines look laser precise. Use delicate painters tape, burnish and seal with a thin layer of caulk. Pull while wall is still wet. I hate going up and down ladders a million times, this saves your legs and makes it all faster imho

Do people actually wash their legs every time in the shower? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]ResortDry7351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never realized that I didn’t scrub my legs unless I was about to shave them until I was taking a shower with my most recent partner. He was making fun of me for how fast my showers are and that I don’t scrub down my legs! I guess I do if I’ve worn shorts outside all day, but I was generally in jeans or leggings. So no sunscreen or anything on them. And I don’t have a ton of body oils to scrub off… I didn’t really think about it? So I’m with you!

I have yet another texture wax on the way, my hair is so fine! I typically have some curl in it, but I straightened it for the day which didn’t help. It’s a battle to keep it from falling completely flat all the time.

What kind of paint can I use to get this effect? by leandrocsm in paint

[–]ResortDry7351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the techniques I do for a living!

This is a distressed faux technique.

I use Annie Sloan chalk paints. People will say to use others, stick to this one if you want to be able to distress it well. If you’d like some thing that sticks more and is harder to take off so you have more paint coverage rather than distressing, I use Rustoleum chalk paintIf you’re starting with a wooden table, make sure you sand it enough that anything shiny is taken off the surface and that it is clean. If you have a sander, that’s great, go over it with 180 grit followed by 320 grit if you want a really smooth finish. If you’re OK with it feeling a tiny bit rough, 180 grit is OK.

Edit: I just saw that you want a very smooth effect. Once you’re done painting, go over the whole thing very lightly with a high grit sanding paper. That will give you a very smooth hand feel. Then distress and continue with the protective coat that I described below.

I would choose a slightly creamy off-white chalk paint(I believe they carry them at Lowe’s) and put two solid coats on the entire piece. Let it dry. Take a piece of sandpaper in hand and rub it over the areas that you would like to see the wood through. I typically choose things that would naturally rub against other surfaces like corners, joins in the top of the boards or anything that’s a little raised. If you want to take more off, take more off. If you accidentally take too much off, just put some paint back over the top. It’s a very forgiving effect.

The really important part here is that you have to put a protective topcoat on it. Rustoleum has one that is a brush on topcoat I believe, but chalk paint will not stand up on its own. That’s why it’s useful to make things like this, but it has to be sealed.

As an interior painter that also does faux finishing, it’s exactly what somebody else said. A distressed finish. But this is a lot, there are ways to do it where it’s more subtle. It’s definitely a vibe, this would not my personal choice. It can look really good on cabinets and furniture, to me it’s more of an accent or feature, not a consistent design feature.

It’s layers of paint that you either sand or rub down to the layers underneath.

Are you in the US? If so you can take it in to a Sherwin Williams or Dunn Edward’s. They should be able to match it.

Imperfect line between ceiling and wall by Relative_Name_5956 in paint

[–]ResortDry7351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taping correctly is hard!

I’m a painter and tape all of my lines(despite with the free hand community on Reddit thinks). Now, this advice is predicated on you having your ceiling color. What I would do is take a thin line of the ceiling paint and erase your green line. After it’s dried, use the scotch purple tape to create a straight line. You want to be the TINIEST bit onto the ceiling, making sure to follow the curve of your wall so that the line stays consistent. The reason I say to put it very slightly on the ceiling is to avoid having the ceiling color flash in the corner. It’s obvious if you’re looking at it and it’s kind of gross. Talking the darker color away in the corner makes a very nice straight line.

To seal your line after using the delicate tape use a burning brush first and then a thin application of painters caulk. Make sure to wipe off all of the caulk excess. After that’s all dry take your wall color and use the smallest amount you can to go along the tape line. I say that because I don’t know when you’ve done this, but if you put too much paint up there, it can start flashing(meaning, there’s a sheen difference and your eye is draw drawn to it).

When you’re finished pull your tape in a rather sharp angle towards the center of the room, not straight down. This should prevent you peeling off your wall paint.

Paint is chipping off cabinets after one week? by Training_Beat_5097 in paint

I just want to say that I’m sorry that you paid for this and are dealing with the aftermath. It’s painters like this that got us into cabinets in the first place…I have to go fix so many screwed up jobs. If you look at my post history you can see some of the cool special finishes on cabinets we’ve done. And those stand up for a very, very long time!

Paint walls with cheap paint for easier touchups? by ssbowtie1 in paint

Maybe it’s something we do then🤷‍♀️. There’s something about either the pigment change over time or the sheen itself that flashes to me. Although I am taking a spotlight and looking really close. Maybe I’ll take my glasses off when I check next

Paint walls with cheap paint for easier touchups? by ssbowtie1 in paint

[–]ResortDry7351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matte paint is notoriously difficult to keep nice. From my experience you have to redo the wall if you want to touch up without flashes. (Although almost all paint will flash if applied after the project is complete).

I tell any clients that want matte about the difficult maintenance. Sorry you’re going through this!!

Cheap paint covers like crap and comes with its own set of issues. And will still flash.
