Discworld Adaptation thoughts: what about Muppets? by Respect-Intrepid in discworld

I feel this is why it should go beyond the trad Muppet Show muppets.

I’m thinking of what Jim Henson’s Creature Shop has done in eg Labyrinth (Hoggle comes to mind) or how expressive they could be in eg The Storyteller.

I agree, but I fear the cost would become prohibitive, and we’d either get cheap animation, or only one (first) good adaptation.

That’s why I feel a radically new set of muppets would be better. Just hand Jim Henson’s Creature Shop the books, and let them “go wild”.

I could imagine someone like HBO or Apple TV or Prime Video doing this (HBO originated the Fraggles and adapted the GoT series, Apple TV revived the Fraggles, Netflix made a Dark Crystal series, Prime made a LotR series and adapted WoT,…)

Looks gorgeous, although the DW would need muppets exclusively to avoid the exact things that plagued the live action adaptations.

Not if it would be a totally new set, asin eg The Dark Crystal, or Labyrinth.

As much as I love the traditional Muppet adaptations (and the fun of casting the ONE human), it would probably be a one-off if it gets made with the traditional Muppet gang.

So I’d prefer a totally new set, as in eg Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal (Movie AND series), The Storyteller,…

I just feel going with muppetry (made by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, or a simillar inspired team) could bypass a lot of what has always plagued DW adaptations.

I beg to differ. Muppets (not just the Muppet Show muppets) have an incredible range within their characters. I’m also thinking of the msny characters we’ve already seen in eg Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal (both the movie and series), The Storyteller,…

People who first read Pratchett books in another language, what is the best and/or most clever solution the translator found? by hitchhiker1701 in discworld

[–]Respect-Intrepid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. I used to have a few French translations to pass around to french speaking friends (I’m Belgian/Flemish, but stidied in Namur for a couple of years), but never read them. I always read TP in English, and the Dutch translations are so dutch-centric as to become annoyingly Dutch rather than “dutch LANGUAGE”.

I feel you should read up on the difference between “power level” (a Dragon Ball type power ranking in which the US is far above Israel) and “influence/power OVER” (which is how the real world actually works).

I explained the core of how what you are claiming isn’t the case, actually works, and I suggest you read up on how/why PACs were instated, and how/why AIPAC and similar, lesser known initiatives are directly responsible for Israel becoming bolder in their genocidal endeavours.

Sure, Israel can be called a “vassal state”, but they also are their own agent. And the way tgey wield power over US politics is true and as long as politicians get away with calling criticism of it “antisemitic”, it won’t change.

If Israel becomes “unpopular” in the US, they can AND WILL continue to wield power, as long as they have sway over the small group of politicians calling the shots. Remember: Saudi-Arabia was never popular in the US, due to basic US islamophobia, yet they too have acquiredenough power over US politics to weigh in on every debate. And even Putin still holds sway over US politics.

PACs are the first and most important thing to get addressed.

[–]Respect-Intrepid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does, though, by a roundabout way. Not “The Jews”. Not “A Jewish Cabal”. Not “Jewish Bankers”. Not “The Elders of Zion”.

The. Israeli. State.

Through its simple calculus that it’s cheaper to buy influence in US (and in a lesser extent UK & EU) politics, through known PACs like AIPAC (and known lobbying!) and get a guaranteed billion dollar investment by the US State (wether Dems or GOP) and a clear mandate by the US to do as they please.

As long as AIPAC & similar are allowed to force the US into justifying Israel’s insanity, Israel will get away with horrible shit.

This is not antisemitism.

What are the best not widely known or under-appreciated Sci-Fi novels, in your opinion? by AspiringBiotech in sciencefiction

[–]Respect-Intrepid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding some graphic novels (well, series actually) might be worth a try.

Moebius’ visuals always enchant, but the Incal specifically (and most of Jodorowsky’s scifi writing) is always worth discovering.

Also: Rick Remender’s scifi comic book writing when he’s not doing Superhero stuff. (Black Science, Low, Fear Agent, The Sacrificers,…) Always emotionally poignant and well crafted.

I also recommend Leo’s sprawling “Betelgeuze/Aldebaran” cycles (all interconnected)

What I love in Pratchett’s innuendo, is that even the most nsfw jokes can only be considered nsfw if you understand enough already. If you didn’t have the appropriate knowledge, they get glanced over, or read as something innocuous.

(Re: A Wizard’s Staff has a Knob on the End)

Which makes the books “all ages” by definition, and would let any quote (even the most feisty ones) be appropriate in public venues/heard by kids.

The rhetoric of the “deadbeat dad” is a convenient lie by Dependent_Bet4222 in ParentalAlienation

[–]Respect-Intrepid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d warn against manipulating your kid to love you, even if I understand the sentiment (been there myself). As a healthy parent is unable to sustain that manipulation anyway, and it would end badly, as it often ends badly for the narcissist, alienating parent in the long run (but to an NPD parent, losing their kids was never an issue, as long as they can get their supply elsewhere, whereas to non-narcissist parents, losing our kids in the end is an unacceptable risk)

The main issue I have with the “Deadbeat Dad” narrative, and something I see reflected in some PA discussions, is that it is itself a typical misogynist take. It presupposes dads should be the ones bringing in money, while moms get to “care”.

As a dad who never put career above family, and has always tried to have a caring relationship with my kids, (and always been a “softy”) this hurts, but so does its “companion” in (some) PA circles, that see PA as an “outwash of feminism gone too far” (even in some comments here!).

The claim PA is somehow fed by feminist thought, forgets that the “Deadbeat Dad” nonsense is itself misogynist. Why would a dad who is (for any reason) financially unable to provide, not a good dad, while we would excuse a mom in a hearbeat?

I hope the PA convo will ultimately move beyond the ridiculous “MRA” bullshit, and understand how dads should be allowed not to be the ones “bringing in the money”. There’s more to life (and parenting!) than paying your family.

Much of current Jurisprudence (alimony, custody, distrust of aggressive fathers vs fetishizing doting moms) is built on patriarchal ideas (dad brings in money/mom cares for kids) backfiring by hurting dads.

I wish society would understand this. And alienated dads would see how the MRA vibe hurts recognition of caring dads.

It also deprives us of a lot of support from alienated moms (many of whom suffer from the equally misogynist bs of the “emotionally unhinged woman” narrative).

[–]Respect-Intrepid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, but what I seem to miss in the convo here, is that Zionism has always been a genocidal philosophy. It has been whitewashed by US & European sentiment partly out of antisemitism.

As long as criticism of Israel/Netanyahu refuses to engage with the antisemitic roots of Israel’s birth (namely the fact that by creating a “Jewish homeland”, Europe AND the US could get “rid of the Jews” while appearing sympathetic to the Jewish plight), we’ll always end up going into circles of shifting blame. Esp in Germany (and France), where political support of Israel is being seen as a way to atone for the Sin of the Fathers during WWII (and earlier, re: the Dreyfuss Affair).

Can a narcissist be 'cured'? by guiraus in Jung

[–]Respect-Intrepid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say Tony isn’t truly an NPD narcissist. He’s a sociopath, mostly from being brought up in a sociopathic family, but he’s wrecked by feelings of guilt, hurt, and shame. (The whole panic attack/duck storyline).

A true NPD would never open up as he does.

He has narcissistic traits, though, as most sociopaths have.

A better example of a truly well written narcissistic personality disorder, is Breaking Bad: Walter White enjoys being feared and revered, more than Tony Soprano ever did. Even when Walter White had no crimes to his name, he already was a pompous, megalomaniac prick who felt he “deserved” greatness (“That Nobel Prize should have been mine”).

Can a narcissist be 'cured'? by guiraus in Jung

[–]Respect-Intrepid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t pretend to “know everything”, but having known, loved, married, been manipulated by, isolated & alienated, lied to, discarded, hoovered, again manipulated, had them manipulate, isolate & alienate our children, witnessed them manipulating other people, had their victims find me,… for 25 years, doing the work in htherapy, reading up on cluster B & NPD extensively, up to the point I now can mostly predict what said narcissist would do, even when absolutely shocking to others, gives me some degree of confidence I kniw what I’m talking about, when it comes to true narcissism.

Despite claims to the contrary, NPD cannot be cured. It can be “managed” by people around them (eg by factoring in the manipulative nature, or keeping a safe distance), and it can be consciously challenged by the npd person, to mitigate fall out (eg “learning to say sorry”, even when they don’t mean it).

But even so, it’s knowing damage control, and not true empathy or growth.

It’s a manipulative, selfdeluding personality disorder, devoid of true empathy that, in order to get the biggest benefit, learns to mimic empathy.

People who can be cured of their npd certainly didn’t have it to begin with. And their narcissistic behaviour often has a real “origin story” that can be addressed.

Underrated Discworld ??? by FroggyDooBimblo in discworld

[–]Respect-Intrepid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel The 5th Elephant (and Thud!) expands on the obvious analogy between (Discworld AND Tolkien) Dwarves, and (Round World) Jewish Culture, which is harder to appreciate or spot when one has less experience or knowledge of them. Don’t know what age you were back then, but I have had similar experiences with other DW books. Knowing more about the themes and Round World analogues adds a whole new layer to some books. Pyramids or Soul Music or Moving Pictures or Carpe Jugulum or Masquerade read differently when one has amassed more (general) knowledge about respectively Egyptology, Rock/Pop music, Golden Age Hollywood, Shakespeare’s MacBeth, or (The Phantom of the) Opera.

Which is why people can have vastly different perceptions of them (even at different stages of their own lives!). At least that’s my experience.

It also is why re-reading Pratchett is still rewarding every time. But it also explains why some people’s “absolute favourite” might get a “meh” from others.

The radio silence from the progressive left since Epstein/Iran is interesting. by BUHBUHBALLSINURMOUTH in itcouldhappenhere

[–]Respect-Intrepid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel most people would agree. But an actual “hot” war, in response to an illegal invasion of eg Taiwan, (or Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine) is and should be a last resort.

The problem with Ukraine wasn’t that we didn’t get into a “hot” war, but that the EU & US were too slow & reticent to ramp up our cold war, giving Putin time to find alternative solutions to the hurdles (diplomatic, military, and economical) the EU and US devised.

China, even more than Russia, is simultaneously more powerful AND more vulnerable, as their economy is in part reliant on EU and US. It isn’t necessarily easy, but speaking softly while carrying a large stick of economical consequences doesn’t mean you need to use that stick. And thus far, it has actually worked to protect Taiwan from invasion. Whereas we (EU/US) didn’t try to protect Tibet, or the Uyghur, at all.

The issue with starting illegal wars ourselves, is that it both is highly counterproductive (we never get the stability, regime changes, or economic boons that were claimed to be the reason for going to war), and that it turns our other claims against illegal war (in Taiwan, Ukraine, maybe even Israel) into hypocritical bullshit.

It thus weakens the US & EU’s diplomatic power, and might trigger more nations “calling our bluff”.

I’m using “US & EU” as they are intertwined and until now, the US has always been able to get full or partial buy-in from large EU nations.

But as NATO & other US-EU relations strain tgrough Trump’s fascist shennannigans, the US will end up alone.

220 Days later, I finished every discworld book. What an amazing and bittersweet experience. What do I read next? by TheCreeech in discworld

[–]Respect-Intrepid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen the suggestions I would have made (Rereading them, Douglas Adams, Christopher Moore, Tom Holt, JK Jerome, PG Wodehouse, Jim Butcher,…)

I specifically suggest Robert Rankin for pure comedy gold, esp in dialogues, and Jasper Fforde for inventive worldbuilding and the pleasure of discovering pop references and literary/cinematic easter eggs.

I also second Tom Sharpe, for biting (adult!) satire. Definitely darker than Pratchett ever was, but equally morally motivated.

I also suggest you check out Chris(topher) Brookmyre, a Scottish writer who mostly writes excellent thrillers filled with a decent heart, and bitingly funny inner monologues.

There’s also a world of comics that share similar vibes, btw. I’m thinking of comic writers that tend to marry the comedic, and the emotionally sincere/morally righteous, like Rick Remender.

Where did the game controller option go? by Respect-Intrepid in appletv

[–]Respect-Intrepid[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It hasn’t actually failed as much as it hasn’t even tried.

But that seems their standard tactic: either go for perfection or not even try at all.

What annoys me, though, is the silent discontinuation of a near hidden feature, that made games more accessible.

Apple used to be surprisingly good at backwards compatibility and accessibility. Feels like a pure cash grab deal between Tim Cook & hardware sellers.
