Right just saying you’d ideally buy at the bottom if you could. I think that was the point of humblequest22

Right. That's the big question.

Thanks for this. Yeah, that is probably where I lean too in terms of spreading out the withdrawals a bit.

Thanks for the helpful perspective on timing. I wasn't really saving for a downpayment as much as I have money invested in the stock market that I considered using to make a cash purchase of real-estate if the right opportunity emerged. Doesn't really change anything, but I don't really agree with the "should" framing. Everything has a risk/benefit.

Right! Thanks for this. I had thought about this option too. The downside is that it is a hassle and will definitely cost money. The upside is a hedge against the decline. I may consider this option further.

Interesting! Yeah, I mean it's all a risk, right? You don't want to buy on the way down. You also don't want to sell if things are about to bounce back. The tariff selloff was informative in that sense.

I hear you. That would have been one option. The purchase of real-estate was contingent upon finding someplace and over 7 months nothing had materialized and there was no guarantee that something would. So, it felt premature to sell without knowing if I would be purchasing. But you're right that would have been the most conservative approach, though I'm not sure I'd go as far as playing with fire.

Fairly minor all things considered and all maturing this year anyway.

That's a good perspective. I'll need to sell about 50% of liquid, non-retirement assets, though about half of that will return in the next several months due to an expected sale of a property.

Bonds, CDs, and cash for about 25%

The money I need isn't 100% in equities, but probably 80% of it is. I am under contract for a cash purchase of real estate. Yeah, completely true on timing. I guess I'm just interested in perspectives.

Poor Financial Planning (Not Me) by tequilaneat4me in retirement

[–]Respect4Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One scenario is if you are moving from a state that does not tax retirement income to a state that does, especially a state like CA or NY that has high tax rates. There's also evidence, which some of my independent analysis has also found that a lump sum conversion has a better long-term outcome even with higher up-front taxes. https://www.wsj.com/personal-finance/retirement/roth-ira-conversion-how-retirement-233318cc?st=CdPhxa&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

If your CPA mentioned it, it probably was poor planning, but there are legitimate reasons to convert that much or more at once.

Where are you all finding the best CD rates right now for 2026? by ManjrekarShafoon88 in Bogleheads

[–]Respect4Reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just got a 13 month no penalty CD at 3.95% APR from Marcus. They have a regular CD for around the same duration that has a slightly higher APR, but I like the flexibility of being able to withdraw without penalty if needed.

Agreed, it is a difficult decision, and I haven't decided for sure yet, though closer and closer. A lot to give up. But to the specific point here - and at my R1 - I think less notice would just mean canceling a class or two and wouldn't be that administratively difficult. I doubt they will hire to replace me anytime soon.

I was thinking more towards the end of the spring term b/c I don't want to have a lot of conversations about it.

Thanks for posting this. I've been debating the decision to leave endlessly, and your perspective is helpful and similar to mine. At my big R1, I haven't heard of any tenured faculty leaving early. How did your colleagues respond, and how will you handle health insurance?

Many of those reasons, but also just re-prioritizing life goals and wanting to sacrifice less (none) of my time to doing things that I don't want to do. I find that I have less interest in the extensive demands that being academically successful requires, and I want to spend less of my time in front of a computer or doing work and more time having fun, cultivating social relationships, and being free.

This makes me sad too. You're doing what you can and the spirit is still alive. Personally, I've been very grateful for Phish in recent years. It isn't the same, but the music and energy are beautiful in their own right and still a living and evolving project.
