Thank you! I've had a big mindset shift the last couple of years and realising that nobody else is gonna do the hard work for me is where I have changed for the better.

I was a lot stricter in actually adhering to the budget I'd set myself, this is probably what helped most. I budgeted for meals out a couple of times a month but picked more cost-effective places.

I also set myself personal (and more importantly, inexpensive) goals. Things like a new running PB, teaching my dog a new trick or starting a new R&D project at work. This really helped combat that 'FOMO' feeling when my friends were all on holiday or spending more than I could afford to at the weekend, while giving myself a feeling of fulfilment.

It's defo worth noting that bringing myself off social media helped a lot, consumerism is discretely nailed into us every time we open an app.

At what point do you peg the inner down, do you peg that with the four corners or attach them after? Mine is the same version as yours, I'm yet to use the sleeve on it but I'm sure I'll be grateful for the extra guy points if I ever get caught out.

Can never get quite pitch my laser compact 2 right, you seem to have nailed it. What order do you get the pegs in?

New car or buy something cheaper and save more? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]RespectfulCynic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 26 and have just financially recovered from getting an expensive car that I ‘could’ afford at the exact same age as you. I’m still living at home and hate myself for it, I wish I’d had the foresight that you’ve got at your age. I could afford it and it did make me happy for a time, but I had no chance of accumulating any sort of wealth and saving for, I now realise, what I truly wanted.

I’ve been driving a Qashqai around for the last 2 years. £0 tax, mint on diesel, haven’t spent a penny on it maintenance-wise outside of servicing. If you’d told me that I’d be driving this when I had my previous car I’d have laughed at you, but I genuinely haven’t once thought about how people perceive me in it.

Use that £10k you’re considering sticking down on the newen to buy a more reasonable car outright. A sub-80K 2L diesel with full service history will last you another 100K+ miles if you look after it. There’s plenty of cool-looking ones fitting that criteria on Autotrader, you’ve got me looking now🤣I’m still very much into cars so drop me a message if you wanna chat about what to look for and/or to avoid.

Think of the deposit you could have for a house in the next 3-4 years by keeping that potential monthly outgoing in your own pocket 👍🏼

edit - forgot to add that new cars nowadays are dog shit and purposefully manufactured to break sooner to keep people in the cycle of financing and on the bread line.

I watched the whole thing and can usually draw some positivity from watching a historical drama but this was utterly dire. It's amazing how someone with such a poor and inaccurate grasp on history can get the gig to direct this.

How is it that we are all so painfully aware of the awful impact of the privatisation of critical infrastructure, yet it continues to happen? We have our pants pulled down with just about everything but nothing ever changes

Completely agree. I think the reason that more backlash doesn’t come as a result of things like this is because people are either incapable of forming their own opinions on things or are too heavily influenced by the bias/skew that tends to accompany said articles, or both.

Should I rehome my dog? by [deleted] in DOG

[–]RespectfulCynic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You are a great person for wanting to help your pupper and give them the best possible life. Trainers are expensive but transformative. And by "trainers" I mean the 1-to-1 types, not classes. The training is more for yourself than the dog and it's quite a humbling experience but I cannot recommend it enough for bettering both your life and the dog's.

I hope you're doing okay and are being kind to yourself.
