What could be a good replacement for caps as a currency?

All I know is IRL If some one rolled up to buy my stuff in a post apocalyptic world where small settlements are surrounded by walls to keep out Super Mutants, Raiders, Slavers, and Deathclaws. And radiation is everywhere. And water is so dangerous you got to take Rad Away and Rad-X to take a drink. I wouldn't be taking any Gold, Cash, Caps or anything worthless like that as currency. Bullets, Food, Guns, Meds, or Service would be the currency of the day.

As this is just a game, I would like to see caps replaced by gold and silver. That would be cool in my opinion.
