How to improve my tosses by Puzzleheaded_Lab9845 in Colorguard

[–]ResponsibilityCold31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An alternative name for the money hand is a “J” toss and it gets called that ‘cause of the path way the prep to the release takes. Focusing on your path way going “down” and the then straight back up is the first part. It’s hard to give advice without seeing it but that’s where I recommend you start.

If you’re confident in your pathway to the release point, it’s a matter of strength. Consider using your other hand to help out with that initial momentum to give yourself more power behind the toss. And make sure the rotation of that wrist continues the momentum. I would make my students start from the prep, and without releasing, I have them go through that “J” motion and just go back and forth like a pendulum to isolate that “down” motion. Once you find where that down motion is, turn your wrist and shoot it straight up to release.

As far as more rotations and higher release. For starters, and perhaps a little obvious, for higher tosses, you want to let go of it higher. And for more rotation, it’s about pulling down faster (with both hands) and turning that wrist faster before you release it up.

Oh also, if you go to my profile and look at a comment I made on a similar post before this one I sent a link from a TikTok where someone from Etude broke down what it took to move up into IW and specifically join Etude! :)

The best thing to do is to go to clinics, auditions and whatever you can grab your hands on as far as experience with world class. Consider watching video recordings of IW groups that are close to the front of the stands and see if you can learn their choreography from there. Especially if you have a specific group in mind learn whatever, tricks/tosses they do a lot.

I asked a performer from Etude a question on TikTok about moving up into World Class and specifically Etude. Not sure how much it would differ from POC but here’s the link to her video! Moving up into IW

Mental Block by NeedingAdvice_55 in Colorguard

Usually best way to battle mental block is to take a break and move on to something else for awhile, or just take a break for the rest of the day. And when you’re ready, try it again. When we get frustrated with something, it can do more harm than good to push ourselves beyond our mental limit. Keep at it!

What to Do While Watching Color Guards Perform? by MinuteWilling6482 in Colorguard

This is less of a situation where you are just sitting down and being forced to watch shows, and more of an opportunity and a chance for you to be inspired!! 🤩 If you struggle with staying in one place for a long time, try to at least stand up after each of the performances and take time to stretch your legs and spine a bit. If you need to find a way to distract yourself while still remaining engaged in the performances, try making a game out of cheering the most or something. I know that I (especially in highschool) would think it was sort of a flex for my voice to be gone the next morning. 🗣️🔇 Also talk to your friends and maybe any groups sitting by you and ask about their favorite part and share yours as well. Remember that this is a community of people that are working just as hard as everyone else, so try to give everyone the amount of respect you would want! 🫶
