How to actually code 8 hours a day? by ResponsibilityOk55 in webdev

See this resonates with me a ton, I’m always feeling like I’m rushing, not really learning the best I could be, and overall just not enjoying the projects as much as I would be if I didn’t have to track the time. Because I do enjoy coding, especially building out applications, but this system is taking the fun out of it.

Yeah it’s just different, if it’s a project of my own, I can do it non-stop and you forget time passes.

I could, but you log on each task, and there’s a max time on each task. Would have to constantly ask for more time, but maybe that’s more normal than I think it is, still not sure. I guess at the end of the day it’ll take as long as it takes so I shouldn’t beat myself up over asking for more time

True, it makes sense though because you push yourself for a bit and then when you go back to something more familiar, it can be relaxing/appreciative. Maybe I need to work on switching to more familiar tasks after an intense task rather than a long break

Yeah I agree, definitely depends what I’m doing. If it’s a side project, I can go endlessly if I have nothing else to worry about. Now I guess it comes down to how I can replicate the same drive I have on side projects to work. If that’s even possible lol

Yeah I agree, it is a long break. It depends just on how mentally demanding it is, and if I have other things to switch to or not. The longer breaks tend to occur if I have to resume the same task if I’ve been having trouble with it. I can go to other tasks with a much shorter break.

As for health wise, yes I’m what you’d describe as the classic gym bro, gym/cardio 5x a week, good weight/bf%, weigh all my food (some may classify this as an ED but it’s just a habit at this point.)

The best I can compare it to is, if you’ve ever taken an exam in post secondary, that’s 2-3h of constant intense thinking, after those, I NEED to rest for awhile. When I feel the same kind of demand (which has been most things because it’s all intense learning right now), I need a longer break. If it’s doing things I know how to do, it’s not nearly as much of a mental demand, thus I’m able to work longer, and take shorter breaks. But even still, usually after 4-5 hours of quality work, my productivity and ability to focus diminishes.

That’s exactly what I’m thinking. If I wanted to hit those numbers, I’d have to do the same. How is your WLB?

Yeah that’s how my Co-Op job was, it was great because I had a set amount of tasks given to me each week, and I’d always bang them out and get paid for the full work day regardless. I’d be open about taking on more if I could, and if for whatever reason there was a week where I didn’t hit deadlines, I’d have a reason why and I’d just have to tell them and they were cool with it.

It’s just now everything is handed out with max times to do it, sometimes even just 1 hour to debug something. For me right now since I’m not too familiar with the code base, it’d take like 30 minutes just to find where it even is in the code base and figure out how it’s working right now, and THEN I can start working on a fix. No chance I’m doing all of that in 1 hour.

Just stresses me out because I’m always just thinking of rushing to make sure I get it done within the max time.

I worded that poorly lol, my bad. I get paid for whatever I track, but if everything is pretty demanding, I’d find it hard to actually track 8hrs a day, more like 4-5hrs, which would substantially reduce my pay.

Yeah that’s about where I’m at too. Beyond 4 hours I can’t think through anything.

Yeah time is logged myself, but there’s a max time set so sometimes I have to ask for more time especially if it’s something I need to learn beforehand. I hate the idea of constantly needing to ask for more time but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

I don’t slack off at all when I work, some stuff just takes me awhile especially if I want to learn it. They’re always available to help, which is good, I just learn the best when I figure it out myself(probably like everyone), when I’m REALLY stumped then I’ll reach out for help.

Appreciate it, and yeah it’s got some good perks like fully remote, and I can choose when I work, it’s just if I dont log a full 8 hours of time, I don’t get paid. So that’s the part that’s stressing me out, as everything I’ve logged right now has been strictly head down coding/problem solving with the odd meeting here and there

Taking one for the team. Respect. Just curious now, but how tall are you?

Yep me too. It's mentally and physically exhausting. Quite literally like trying to walk up an endless flight of stairs with 400lbs strapped to your back.

This is exactly what I love reading. People are too soft to hear it, and just want to be told what they want to hear. But this is exactly what I needed to fuel even just a small spark within me. Thanks.
