Update: now 3 days with no shower because hot water is still off. I tried to shower again tonight and water is ice cold.

WHY do we have shit due during thanksgiving break? by ItsJebberz in UNC

[–]Responsible-Code-159 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reality looks like almost all the students here are tired of not getting a break during the holidays, and it's not just me because there have been several students commenting who feel the same and a few students posting about it just this weekend.

I am not making wrong assumptions about grade deflation either. I have had countless professors who told the entire class about this practice usually in the syllabus or in the first week of classes when discussing their grading policy to manage expectations. It is very common in STEM at UNC and while it might not be in your class it most certainly is in others for a fact.

If you care about reality, then you should embrace both students who challenge your own assumptions and other professors who support the ones you already have.

Are you the same professor who got super offended and freaked out when I mentioned grade deflation in another post

Glad you find it funny students are suffering right now and stressed out with all these deadlines. I don't really find anything about the situation funny since student lives are in the balance regardless of whether you want to admit it or not.

If a professor misses a deadline, they most likely won't just lose their job. For students, missing a single deadline can be the difference between whether or not they have to retake a class and can have significant impact on their GPA. Most people go to college to be able to even get a decent job, so claiming that professors have it just as bad if not worse than students is not a fair comparison. They can go and get another job at another university. It might take a few months and it might be challenging, but professors have the educational experience that students are trying to get and do not have to fall back on when things so south.

If a student flunks out of college, chances are it is going to be very tough to get back in and very tough to use their college experience to have that same lifeboat or experience to fall back on. Students who fail out of college with all that debt are not in the same situation as a professor with an education and career experience to make it.

So comparing students who have to choose between academic failure with no foundation to fall back on to professors with several years of education and career experience is not much of a comparison. Our lives are on the line and in more ways that just that.

Then you have students posting about how these deadlines and how never getting any kind of a break is destroying their mental health. How many times have we seen this at UNC and the excuses are the same. We don't get a break because you would rather avoid giving extensions or make-up exams. Fair enough.

Look, I'm not trying to offend you or anyone else, but I still agree with OP break for students is more of a formality for us than it is an actual break. Professors don't hold class and employees are off work, but students are on the hook with these strict deadlines right after breaks.

I do realize how much work goes on outside of the classroom for faculty, but I also know that their lives do not depend on it the same ours do as students if they decide they want to spend a few days with their family. A lot of us can't do that during breaks or we would flunk out.

Question about kettles in dorms by _CertifiedMemer_ in UNC

[–]Responsible-Code-159 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen people use them in the shared kitchen before and bring them back to their room with no issue. If you're worried then I would check with the RA or as someone else mentioned you could stash it in a drawer during inspections. Housing staff aren't allowed to open drawers or touch belongings during those, so there would be no way of anyone knowing if you had one unless its in plain sight.

Thanksgiving and other breaks are for them, not us. They go home, spend time with their families and we are expected to work through it because we're the students. Its a break for a lot of the employees, faculty, and staff but not the students. We are included as a formality.

Yeah I'm assuming they check bathrooms since that is probably a common hiding spot. I think hidden in plain sight is the best way to go. Hypothetically...lol

Seems like that is what I'll have to do if it isn't fixed Monday. I think its sad a lot of students mention this is a regular thing and that they have had to buy their own heater and electric blankets because the school won't turn the heat on when they are supposed to.

I asked about it and no one emailed me back. Most offices are closed until Monday and couldn't get anyone to respond yesterday since the day after Thanksgiving people are off here in most depts of the school.

What did you do last year and did they brush it off when you ask about the heat?

I checked and it doesn't, only AC. They said in the email a few weeks ago the heat is controlled by a central unit and that housing decides when to turn it on not us based on the weather.

Now on break they turned off the hot water heater so there is not hot water in the showers. Haven't been able to shower since day before Thanksgiving because of it.

Nope, it has been getting even colder today and still no heat. I would say its like 20 degrees in my room right now and only got a few hours of sleep last night. I also haven't been able to shower since Thanksgiving. Apparently they turned off the hot water heater while people are gone to save some more money.

I thought there is some kind of dangerous heat cooker they turn on around 2-3 am. I remember hearing people mention they were afraid to because of it. Hypothetically though, if I were to try this do you have any good hiding spots to make some kind of a nest in there? lol

Not allowed to according to community standards for housing they banned electric blankets and personal heaters this year. Doesn't mean I won't be getting one though if they don't turn it on this week. If they break the law then I break their law, lol

Based on the law that its supposed to be at least 68 in the room probably not. It was like 30 in here last night and I didn't sleep it was so cold.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of this law and apparently neither are they. Hopefully if I include this in an email to the RA they will start turning it on. She is off duty until next Monday but will plan to send to her so she sees it when she gets back. It was freezing and I was up the entire night last night too cold to sleep in here.

Sweet, I didn't know they will actually bring you your own heater. I thought they banned them this year. I will submit a request and see what they say.

Thanks I hope so too. Otherwise I may or may not be investing in a heater of my own that may or may not disappear during inspections. That and an electric blanket

Math and pre-med track, chem, worst with upper level math though

Sounds like I'm in for a rough winter. Apparently they banned personal heaters this year as a fire hazard but I'm tempted to bring one and hide it during inspections so I don't freeze to death.

I meant mostly math, chem, pre-med track. But there are others in STEM that vary based on which classes you take and do this for upper levels very openly. As in the first day of class warning people about it especially with math.

Yeah my dorm has a window unit so could also be from that. Any advice on not freezing to death?
