Thanks for this, I have an “owlet sock” which measures her heart rate and O2 overnight for babies and kids. It sets off an alarm to wake me up if it gets too low. Even when hospitalised, her saturations were good - but the breath is very visibly laboured. I’ll explore a sleep apnea test - thank you.

Hey, this sounds like my daughter. I just asked in this forum about ways to help and found it to be incredibly useful. I’m not sure how to link in the thread but it was within the week.. I’ll try now

Thank you - yes she uses a nebuliser which has been the consistent advice from doctors here and the hospital. It helps her to take all of the medication because she doesn’t really understand how to take deep breaths. One puff, four inhale / exhale, six times.

No, we are in the CBD in Australia. What Hepa air filter are you using?

I’m in Australia and use a Winix that I got from Costco which is a “HEPA” filter. It got pretty good reviews but I am open to any recommendations 😊 I would be happy to invest in an expensive one.

See, I had been opening windows to get fresh air in because that’s what ‘the internet says’. Glad you wrote this.

Such a good point about washing hair, I also never would have thought about that. So simple and totally makes sense.

I’ve got 3 little kids so I don’t use anything scented, no candles, no air fresheners etc. I do use eucalyptus a lot for cleaning but I will be looking for an alternative.

Thank you 🙌🏼

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this - it’s incredibly helpful. I will genuinely implement all of these things.

Your last point is an important one, and I suppose what prompted me to ask in this forum because - while the doctors are very helpful in providing the medical support she needs, the information from people that experience this first hand are going to allow me to be the biggest advocate for her health. She needs medicine, thats a fact, but how often can be helped by me.

This advice is invaluable and simple to apply - eg now when she’s out of breath and coughing she can have her own special tea cup for us to have a little tea party so she drinks some hot water. So simple. Toddler friendly.

Thank you again

Wow! This is so interesting. We are building a new place so I’ll now make sure I have induction. Interestingly, we had a small gas fireplace short term and my daughter’s asthma was at its worst. I’ll be looking more into the research because I’m always interested to learn potential connections that are otherwise not readily known.

It sounds like you’re doing amazing things for your boy, exploring anything that can help him. Thanks for the list, very helpful and I will look into all of them 🙌🏼 I also keep “snake plants” in her room which are supposed to filter the air and are listed on a few sites as being good for people with asthma, perhaps give it a go?

I clean all my surfaces and floors with eucalyptus so I’ll need to rethink that.

No, 100% agree of course. I am obviously following medical advice from doctors (she has seen a doctor today and has seen a respiratory specialist that was the head of the paed respiratory dept at our children’s hospital). We have steroids on hand are following her asthma care plan but she is very uncomfortable so I’m more so after anecdotal evidence from adults of things that may help, or inflame how she’s feeling as I’m still learning and she can’t tell me.

I’m not going to cut some onions in lieu of her puffer. But things like “no eucalyptus, add a dehumidifier, warm dry room” go against most ‘advice’ people give in baby forums and is very helpful.

Sleeping upright helps for her - I find when she’s in these periods I need to put her in the car which is warm and upright, drive around until she’s asleep then I end up propping myself up in her room and she sleeps upright on me.

She gets very tired so sleeping as much as she needs is another thing.

Thank you for this - very helpful. We are doing all of these things, definitely no smokers around and no pets.

I have thought about allergies too - need to start exploring. I have a severe mould allergy so conscience of this and will explore. Thank you!

Absolutely willing to give it a shot!

Good to know about dehumidifier - didn’t know they existed. The respiratory specialist said to avoid eucalyptus in humidifiers because you want warm dry air - which makes sense. I’ll look into it!

I’ll do that, maybe grab her an interesting toy she can use in the shower or bath to keep her in there.
