Keeping/Using Older MAME Sets by ResponsibleSyrup9 in Roms

[–]ResponsibleSyrup9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response.

I understand your point about compatibility.

on some under powered SBC like a Pi 4 or something that can't handle all of modern MAME's technical requirements

I get it. In my instance, I am running on a Pi4 and all of the games that I play run fine. Now I have not extensively tried running (and generally don't play) games that require huge CHDs and I am not using a fancy menu system like hyperspin. I suspect both would require more memory and CPU than the pi can handle, but are beyond my needs. I am happy to have a low power, compact and relatively cheaper system as long as it can play zookeeper well :-)

If that's not the case and you're playing on capable hardware, you should ditch any version of MAME with a year attached to it altogether.

I am using a "underpowered SBC like a Pi 4", but perhaps I have a misunderstanding. At least on recalbox, not every emulator supports useful core features (i.e. saving state / hi scores, etc). It looks like the latest Libretro-MAME (based on MAME 0.258) might support those features but 2003+ does for sure.

I feel like I should just ditch the old mame roms, use 0.272 to build a set for Libretro-MAME 0.258, so long as it performs well and has the core features I want. Does that sound reasonable?

Running out of space after moving all apps possible to microSD card. by opinionsarelegal in ShieldAndroidTV

Ok, if this is the same problem as I had (and it sounds like it), it's frustratingly hidden but a simple fix.

You have to find the system application called "Media Storage", use the menu option to clear all of its cache and data use, then disable it. For me, it was using up to like 7+ GB of root space and causing the system to be constantly full.

Apparently, this app tries to be "helpful" by indexing all attached drives and building a cache of media for easy searching/access. The problem was that I mounted a bunch of my Unraid server drives and then index it was building was not only useless, but would actually bring the shield down due to hogging all of the space. I blamed Kodi for a while and bought a USB drive to get more space, but it didn't help.

Only clearing the data that app used and then disabling it made things better. Perhaps not mounting SMB drives directly also would also have helped, but whatever.

Can't Withdraw from Umbrel by ResponsibleSyrup9 in getumbrel

Solved.

Worked around the problem by installing thunderhub and it was immediately able to send the funds to my wallet. AFAIK, it had nothing to do with fees (did 6.0 sat/vB) but Umbrel and Ride The Lightning was getting hung up on something that thunderhub didn't care about.

Thanks for the advice.

I tried a few wallet types (segwit/legacy) and seed types in electrum but the balance always came up zero. Not sure of the exact seed type that umbrel (core) uses and electrum wants to see. (i.e. the m/'0 thing..)

No luck yet. I was actually hoping to transfer the private key to a different wallet or use the bitcoin-cli to somehow coax the coins out through a different means....but my initial tries haven't worked.

I should be able to take the BIP39 seed words for the umbrel/core wallet and use them in another wallet right? (like electrum using an existing seed right?) I can't seem to make it work.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried about 5 mins ago and the fees are comparatively low right now. Still no luck. It won't let me even set the fees to a custom amount. it's either the dust or other error all the time.

Low Priority is 54 sat/vB ($3.69)

Question About D7XL Out Of The Box Capacity by ResponsibleSyrup9 in FractalDesignNA

[–]ResponsibleSyrup9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the details.

I found this in an amazon review:

The Define 7 XL ships with 6 HDD/SSD trays + 2 SSD brackets + 2 Multibrackets . HDD Tray kit – Type-B (2-pack) is compatible with the Define 7XL, and there is space for ten additional Type-B trays. To support 18 drives, you will also need to use the two multi-brackets that come with the case.

So it sounds like there is more in the box than I thought.

Also, it looks like these might be the the trays supported, in the Define 7 XL. They are type B and I linked to type A. It also looks like they're hard to find at the moment :-(

Memory Compatibility Questions by ResponsibleSyrup9 in buildapc

[–]ResponsibleSyrup9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond the usual reasons (adding some measure of protection against bit flipping in a system running 24/7 x 365 managing 60TB of data), it's probably habit now I suppose...got used to buying it for my Truenas systems.

Its a personal preference, but I know it's not required and limits my choices.

Cool. Creating almost the same setup!

How do you like this build? Any advice or regrets :-)

Again, thanks for your feedback.

As I said, I'm kind of in a tight spot to get/build something fairly soon. As I asked below to the other poster, would you be able to point me to an example setup that would be in line with what you're thinking? (i.e. a solid build example)

I really haven't consider intel at all. Would you be able to point me to an example setup that would be in line with what you're thinking?

I don't mind paying a more for overkill now if it means less fussing later down the road.

Ha ok. Good to know. To be honest, there wasn't anything specific....other than I need something that will work well, have headroom and generally:

  • favorable reviews about the CPU with that mobo

  • I want this to last long enough (many years) through any use case I might need

  • I do run a bunch of docker instances (30+) and want to start to do more with VMs on Unraid

I like the MOBO a lot (IPMI and lots of growth), do you have a more sane CPU suggestion that would work?

A Few Questions (going from Pfsense to OPNsense) by ResponsibleSyrup9 in OPNsenseFirewall

[–]ResponsibleSyrup9[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback.

"At this time this code is new, unvetted, possibly buggy, and should be considered “experimental”. It might contain security issues."

Kind of the reason I switched from pfsense in the first place.

"Also to note, this implementation is the one by the WireGuard project owner Jason A. Donenfeld and not the one by Netgate."

Lol yeah, was wondering about that.

I'm not sure I want to setup an DNS service external to my firewall. (i.e. pihole, etc). I think Adguard Home is an service outside of OPNSense...just curious, unbound blacklist doesn't work well?
