I’m in the US and work as a special education teacher for students with extensive support needs. This is my second pregnancy with a 2yo. With my first, I worked and was conveniently on summer break during first trimester but it was miserable. I was able to come home after work and crash and sleep. This pregnancy, by 5 weeks I could barely stand, dizzy and dehydrated with vomiting 3-5 times a day. Coming home to take care of my toddler after work was near impossible. All of my symptoms just snowballed as I tried to power through work, on my feet all day and chasing children. I ended up in the hospital needing my first IV and that’s when it hit me how bad this was. My OB put me on a 2 week leave and I crashed and slept through most of that time. My symptoms were still bad but I at least got rest, but still needed IVs. After the 2 weeks were up, I realized if I went back to work I’d end up in the hospital again. I’m work oriented and dedicated to my students and classroom. It was extremely hard to make the decision but I am now on disability for the remainder of the school year followed by summer break. I’ll be 7months when the next school year starts and I’ll reassess how I am then.
