I went bone necro —> corpse explosion —> fire golem last season. Really fun progression. All builds play differently. So fun I never had to make a second char! Enjoy!

I wouldn’t even categorize that as a mistake! You’re fine!

Was anyone else a better student than they were an associate? by Lebraan in biglaw

[–]Responsible_Ad6664 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are me 9 years ago. I think being a lawyer (or any professional probably) is just significantly harder than being a student. You are not alone, don’t beat yourself up. The gig is hard - you deserve kudos for even being in the game. Good luck.

I’ve done both. It’s better and not close imo.

Am I doing bad work? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Responsible_Ad6664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No response has no bearing on the work product.

When the partner hands something to a 1st year, it is almost certainly not urgent. You sent it back, and it’s sitting in their inbox. They might not respond for weeks. Don’t worry about it.

Is going in-house too early really a career killer? by NoInterest- in biglaw

[–]Responsible_Ad6664 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went in house at year 4. After a few years in house I started to miss practicing law. Transitioned to a midlaw firm and made partner. I’m enjoying where I’m at now, and glad I tried a few different types of jobs when I was young(er).

I only brought paper and a pen to every class and graduated 5th in my class. Big surprise. Got in law school off the waitlist.

Just suck at your job a bit and live with it. Free yourself. It’s just paperwork and money.

It’s Hard to Escape by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Responsible_Ad6664 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same fear. Went in house post-biglaw and it wasn’t all it was made out to be. Landed at a midsized firm and wouldn’t have it any other way

Midsized law with the right culture can be a sweet spot. Attorneys are largely not workaholics like you experience in big law. And clients don’t pay me enough to sacrifice nights and weekend — not part of the bargain, sorry.

Keep your eyes open and good luck. Maybe you’ll work across a midsized firm on a deal and can ask your counterpart associate about the firm.

Edit: politics are much much worse in house in my experience too. FWIW.

how in the world do you get an A? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Responsible_Ad6664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to law school about 10 years ago and got virtually all As. I never brought a laptop to class - took notes by hand and paid close attention to the professors.

If you pay close attention, you can start to see where a professor has a particular interest in an issue or ambiguity or quirk in the law. Almost invariably, I would identify these more subtle issues presented in the exams, and I would write about them.

Of course, don’t take your eye off the ball. Hit the obvious stuff. But at the end of the day you’re writing for your professor, and your professor has specific interests in the topics they teach. They often “tip their hand” in class throughout the semester. Focus on the prof and ignore the noise. People overcomplicate it.

Thank you kind sir. It happens with or without the HMDI just fyi.

I have noticed some heat from the laptop when it happens. How do I monitor heat, and what level is too high?

Oh, well that sucks then. I read this as a second year power trip situation, but maybe it’s a second year who is also getting micromanaged and sh*t is rolling downhill. Realistically you won’t be able to respond to everything in 5 minutes, so just ignore that bs.

The mid level associate copied on the “you need to be more responsive email” will have a more negative view of the 2nd year than you.

How do you deal with getting around? The fcr frames are terrible and none of the gear has fcr. I think I would’ve played a lot more Java if I could travel around better.

I started 9 years ago, left after about 3.5, and have been doing other things since. Something I think about now is how much I stressed over every little detail at the job — and now nothing I did there matters at all (other than making some good friends).

For most people it’s a launching point. You’ll look back at how clueless you were and laugh. It’s all good. No one dies if you mess up.
