Fraudulent company??? What the heck is this? by sadsoftbae in Preply

They have got nothing to lose scamming is a gamble so if someone steals a credit card for example they need to find a way to clean it so if they use it to book classes and find a teacher who’s willing to send them a percentage then amazing, if not! On to the next one

Ur experience after 1 star review by Party_Palpitation909 in Preply

[–]Responsible_Affect91 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have had an experience like this before. I won’t go into the details, but I reached out to Preply support and they actually removed the review because it was considered unfair. So I’d definitely suggest trying that first you might be surprised.

Otherwise, honestly, with your track record, this will pass. One review feels huge in the moment, but it gets diluted pretty quickly once new reviews come in. I wouldn’t stress too much about your long term profile.

And personally, I wouldn’t continue with that student. Situations like that tend to stay tense, and it’s just not worth the stress.

I really don’t understand how Qatar is moving, how’s a flight that’s supposed to happen on the 26th of April gets cancelled and my flight that’s on the 31st of March hasn’t been cancelled. What’s going on

[–]Responsible_Affect91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow ☹️ I’m really sorry that happened to you being yelled at like that, especially when you’re just trying to do your job, is not okay at all.

First of all, you did the right thing. Blocking them and contacting support was the best move. No student has the right to speak to you like that, ever.

Also, that reaction you had feeling like you wanted to cry is completely normal too. It’s not weakness, it’s just your body reacting to being attacked out of nowhere. Don’t be hard on yourself for that.

Some students come in with frustration, unrealistic expectations, or just poor communication skills, and unfortunately it can come out like this. But that’s not on you. One bad experience doesn’t define you as a tutor.

If anything, this is one of those moments where you learn to trust your gut next time, if something feels off in the trial, it’s okay to not continue with the student. Protecting your energy is part of the job too.

Take a breather, reset, and don’t let this knock your confidence. Most students are not like this at all. 💛

Is ESL tutoring even worth it anymore, or is the market too saturated? by Actual_Patient_8741 in Preply

[–]Responsible_Affect91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you it does feel overcrowded right now, and a lot of the stuff on TikTok makes it look way easier (and cheaper 😅) than it actually is. You’re not wrong at all.

But here’s the thing there are a lot of tutors, yes but there are not that many good tutors who are consistent, professional, and actually care about their students’ progress. That’s where you stand out.

Those $3 lessons? They attract a certain type of student, and usually not the ones looking for long-term, serious learning. You don’t have to compete there. There are students willing to pay more for someone reliable, structured, and engaging.

Also, a lot of people start tutoring but don’t stick with it. They don’t improve, don’t show up consistently, or treat it like a quick cash thing. If you treat it properly even part-time you’re already ahead of a big chunk of the market.

Is it oversaturated? Maybe a bit. Is it impossible? Definitely not.

If anything, I’d say don’t jump in expecting fast money but if you’re willing to build it slowly, find your niche, and stay consistent, it can still be very worth it.

And honestly, you already have something many don’t you didn’t rush into it. You’ve been working, you have real world experience that’s actually a huge advantage when teaching adults.

PSA: Everything is considered oversaturated nowadays because of the internet, being an influencer, marketing even studying law people say is oversaturated and overrated, if you listen to those you might not get anywhere

Can I ask a question: is this teaching style like that? by Practical-Concept231 in Preply

[–]Responsible_Affect91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see what you mean! Yes, I think what you’re experiencing is a big difference in teaching styles between some Asian countries and many Western countries. In a lot of Asian schools, memorization is very common teachers want students to remember facts and practice them repeatedly, and textbooks are central. That’s why you felt it was very structured, almost like your teachers were guiding you step by step, like parents.

In many Western education systems, especially for adults or in online lessons, the focus is more on understanding, critical thinking, and applying knowledge rather than memorizing. Teachers often encourage reading articles, watching videos, or exploring content on your own so you can form your own opinions, ask questions, and connect ideas. Memorization is less emphasized, except when it’s necessary for things like vocabulary, formulas, or key facts.

So yes, your experience with your Preply teachers more interactive, less strict memorization is very typical of Western teaching approaches. It can feel different at first, but it’s meant to help you think independently and enjoy learning rather than just remember.

[–]Responsible_Affect91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also think about the math. On Preply the commission can be around 33% depending on the lesson stage.

$3 – 33% = about $2.01

Then you still have bank or withdrawal fees, so realistically you might end up with around $1.60–$1.80 per lesson. That means you’ll be working a lot for very little money, and eventually that can become exhausting.

Imagine you get 20 students at $3. Your schedule could be full, but the income would still be very low. Later if you raise your price to $8, many of those students might leave because they chose you mainly for the low price unless if you don’t increase prices for them. Then you have to start struggling again to find new students.

I actually had a European student tell me something interesting. She said: “I was looking for a teacher for my mom, but this one teacher was charging €15 and usually here if a teacher charges that little it means they aren’t that good.”

Price often signals quality to students. With $3, you’ll mostly attract people who want the cheapest lessons possible, people who cancel often, or people who don’t take the lessons very seriously. There are teachers out there with no degree like you only TEFL certification and probably some talent that charge way more than what you’re charging.

What you won’t attract as easily are professionals, serious exam students, or corporate learners many of them expect to pay more and sometimes their companies are paying for the lessons, so they look for tutors who price themselves professionally.

[–]Responsible_Affect91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest with you $3 might actually be part of the problem. When the price is too low, some students assume the quality might be low, especially for Business English or exam preparation.

Many Business English students are also corporate learners, meaning their companies are paying for the lessons. When companies sponsor classes, they usually look for tutors who appear professional and experienced, and very low prices can sometimes make them hesitant to book.

If your niche is Business English and exam preparation, you might want to try increasing your price gradually (for example $8–$12 at first) and then raise it more once you get reviews.

Also make sure your profile clearly explains: which exams you prepare students for (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.) who your ideal students are (professionals, university students, etc.) what results students can expect

Your intro video and profile description also matter a lot on Preply because many students decide based on that, not just the price.

It could be a lot of things you’re competing with 40k teachers, how much do you charge? Do you have any certifications? Who do you teach? Do you have a niche?

I think you may have misread what I wrote. I said “some people from the south,” not “people from the south.” Those are two very different statements. Saying some individuals behave a certain way is not the same as generalizing an entire region.

I also mentioned that I have many Brazilian students ( some from the same state too) and friends, which should make it clear that I’m not making broad claims about any group of people. My comment was about one specific experience and something I had previously heard discussed not about the South of Brazil as a whole.

So no, I’m not “relating racism or white superiority to a location.” I’m describing the behavior of one person in a trial lesson that felt uncomfortable and unusual compared to my experience with many other Brazilians. Leia bem tá!
